Hi, I'll be in the city between July - August.
Does anyone have a name of a good hotel where I could go for a few days to relax away from the madness of Kolkata?

Also, does anyone have a recommendation for a good hotel in Darjeeling as well please?

What's the best way of travelling to Darjeeling? Air, rail or road? Any indication of costs would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Air : The closest air port is at Bagdogra (about 88 kilometers from Darjeeling and a three and half hour drive) and is connected by air with all the Metros in the country.
Rail : New Jalpaiguri(NJP) is the nearest rail head and is also about 88 kilometers from Darjeeling. NJP is also connected with all the major cities of the country with most of trains heading for the north-eastern states making a stop at this junction.
Bus services can be availed from Siliguri to Darjeeling from Tenzing Norgay Bus Terminus, Siliguri. However, it is more convenient to travel in smaller vehicles which are available on seat sharing basis/hire, from near the Bus terminus, airport and railway station. The fare per passenger on a seat sharing basis from Siliguri to Darjeeling is less than Rs 100.

Thumbs up Shantiniketan, peace beyond Kolkata

Bolpur or Shantiniketan as it is commonly known is a place I'ld recommend anyone looking for peace outside Kolkata for a day or two. Mark and Meadows is a great place to stay in there. Do enjoy yourself going around the university on a hired rickshaw.

As for Darjeeling, I'ld recommend Hotel Sonar Bangla as it is a true value for money with some great authentic Bengali recipe to offer.

If money is a point of consideration while travelling from Kolkata to Darjeeling, I suggest you take one of the night trains to NJP (eg. Darjeeling Mail, Guwahati Garib Rath, Saraighat Express) and then a shared cab onward to Darjeeling.

Enjoy your stay and do share your experiences.

Depends how far outside Kolkata you want to go !

The Tollygunge Club is a green oasis not far outside the city centre - but definitely far from the 'madding crowd'. 100 acres of lawns, trees, golf course, horse riding, tennis, swimming, good food and a quiet ambience ...... and not far to travel!
It is better to light a candle than complain about the darkness.

Tolly Club

Yeah, The Tolly club is your best bet for some 'peace & tranquility'. Don't even think of trying out these fancily advertised spa's & resorts on the outskirts because they're all half-baked bourgeois joints!

You might want to find out about the membership requirements at Tolly though. It is a members only club, but they do give out temporary membership.

As for Darjeeling... well, Darj isn't the best place to visit right now with all this Gorkhaland agitation going on. Sikkim is much nicer with many options. Especially West Sikkim.

To get to both you'd have to fly to Bagdogra. The flight could cost you anything from 2500 to 5000, depending on which website you book through. Zoomtra.com & Travelocity.com offer excellent rates & if you book a month in adavance you're likely to get it at 2500 or so.

From the airport you can get Private Taxis to take you anywhere you wish to go. The rates are 1600-2000 to Darj or Gangtok (capital of Sikkim).

As for Hotels... I suggest you buy yourself a Lonely Planet & take it from there.
