Not Dhobi Ghat, the movie. Neither the famous Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat of Mumbai. Actually there exists a 113 year old Dhobi Ghat in Kolkata, right opposite Maddox Square. A rather dingy place, but full of activities.

It's basically a human-powered washing machine hidden in the heart of the city. A century old colonial legacy, where a few hundred hands flog the dirt and grime out of mountainous heaps of laundry from crack of dawn to dead of the night in a back-breaking daily routine.

The South Dhobi-khana was established by the British Government in 1902. Erstwhile Calcutta being the capital city of British India, the largest dhobi-khana of that time with 108 washing blocks was set up to serve the British Laundry needs. This dhobi-khana currently consumes nearly 78000 liters of water everyday which is supplied directly from tallah tank.

A recent visit there made me awestruck with the enormous amount human effort being spent to wash clothes, bed sheets, towels etc. Sharing a few clicks with you guys, so that you get an idea of the place. Some better photographers among us can visit the place (if not done already) looking for exciting frames.
Regards,
Avishek.

Fascinating.

I wonder how they keep each batch of washing accounted for and complete through the entire process!

Permission to enter

Hi,

I'd like to visit the Dhobi Ghat. I heard a lot about it. As I'm new to this city can you kindly tell me where to get the permission to enter the Dhobi ghat? Would really appreciate your help.

@Golghar

Singapore Dhoby Ghaut is a different place altogether
On a recent visit, I couldn't find any washerman's area there !!!
It's a busy part of the city and highly cosmopolitan like other areas of Singapore.
They even have a MRT station with that name

Singapore's Dhoby Ghaut now only exists as a Metro interchange. A huge underground complex connecting MRT three lines.
