I am shocked to learn of the proposed plan in Kolkata of building a Book Shopping Mall in College Street to replace the existing Boi Para - bookstalls - in the neighbourhood. Is this really happening? How soon?

Its in ruins. I've heard of chunks falling off the walls of a few buildings there. Even if not a mall ,renovation is very much required.

what about the roadside stalls?

Is anything like the "New Ballygunge Supermarket" planned for them? That would be sad! Progress. Globalization. Guess I'm getting old.

As someone who has active business interests in that area, I wonder how much of the noble idea will actually remain after the completion of the mall. There is lot of money changing hands, and trust me most of the small booksellers are being left out of it. It will be a large mall, yes. Bookshops, yes. College Street as we used to know it, I don't think so.

brave.
