Was thinking of taking a boat ride on the Hoogly when next in Kolkata, thinking of boating it to Bharatpur.

Any idea how long this will take one way ? (? hours)

Any suggestions most welcome.

TIA

No suggestions? No wonder, some more detail would have been nice. A google search on my end reveals your boat ride isn't possible and the quickest train takes 20+ hours..... but then you don't mean that Bharatpur anyway, and I know of no other...without looking again. I was actually hoping your thread was going to discuss one of those companies that do week long boat trips along the Hoogly/Ganga etc, It's something I've personally wanted to do for a while, alas, it was a query I can't really help you with, but good luck with it

Google these companies— Uniworld — Avalon — Pandaw.

Not sure what detail you would require for a simple suggestion, then again I was hoping for a Kolkatan to give some advice.

BTW, Barrackpur is the place I'm looking at up river.

It might be the best of times or the worst of times...but it's the only time you've got!

Personally, I'd rather ask Indiamike than TripAdvisor --- although it might be useful for booking stuff. We are a travel site, right?

I know, but at least it gives you a starting point if you don't get any IM answers!

There are two ways of doing this. The first and more organised way is to book a ticket for some river cruise. WBTDC offers that too. The downsides are that you will have to share a largish vessel with strangers and it will follow a strict timeline and route.
More relaxed and customisable is if you arrange a trip with a manual paddle boat at one of the Ghat. It will be a relaxed trip with the entire boat at your disposal. The main city ghats like Babu ghat , Princep Ghat have many such boats but Burrackpur is way too distant from there.
I suggest that you start from Belur or Dakshinesawr, i.e. the northern part of the City. You can negotiate a bit and arrange something , boatmen will be available. A roundtrip would take not less than 3/4 hours so wouldn't be cheap. What are your probable dates ? Perhaps I can give you a better picture if I know the date.
Cheers

thanks iamsomnath, I think at this stage the second option will be more suitable.
