Hello,

Basically, I just need a place to sleep and wash for a month...I'm not sure what the best option would be. I would prefer something cheap, safe and near Belur Math. Would there be something? Thanks!

Edit:
Also, this would be for January...

I'm also looking for something, but have some local friends searching for me fortunately. Last year, when I needed to rent a room in delhi, I searched on classified ads and found a flat to share with a friend, you can try and check some classified ads for kolkata on the net.

sulekha.com is an option.

@Holikarang You could stay where I will be staying in South Calcutta. It is very near the Metro Subway stop. Single A/C rooms are around Rs850/day with breakfast included. Also it has all the creature comforts you are probably used to.

thanks, but I'm looking for a flat, not a guesthouse, and if I can't find it I'll stay at some friends's place, so there is no need to suggest this again.

If you have friends in Calcutta, ask them to scout around for a house/apartment for you ahead of time. Ask them to check the weekend papers or go through a site like Sulekha. The area around Belur Moth should be economical unless you need a luxurious hotel. Ask your friends to scout the place from the 'safe' angle.

I also have some local friends searching for me a room/flat in Kolkata for a month, but they say it's quite hard... anyway having someone who can check the accomodation for you is a good option.

By the way, I don't know what 'comforts you are used to' means. I have some special needs with food, but for the rest I am fine with what can be found. I have noticed many Indians think that Westerners all prefer to live in luxury. I don't live in luxury in my country and I've been to India before, the places I prefer to stay are quite simple.
