Wayanad - Is it safe to travel
Hello friends,

I am shortly to travel to Wayanad on early June 2009 on a personal tour with spouse. I was repeatedly informed by close mates that a year or so back there were SIMI training camps spotted at nearby Wayanad district. Is this true?? SIMI training camps are terrorist group that use the help of locals and train them. Also Wayayand was flagged for smuggling arms and ammunitions into the country. How true is this and please highlight the scenario at current situation.

I am confused but very scared to get to Wayanad if the scenario and travel advisory from the forum is not positive.

Please advise.

If you have serious concerns about security issues in Wayanad, then why bother at all? Seek out an alternative destination!
Other than stray media reports, there won't be any authoritative sources to base your decisions upon. Why spoil your precious holiday? Go to Periyar or any other place.

To Amit :-

Till now, several times I did travelled across Wayanad . I did travelled across Touristy / Non-touristy circuits Of wayanad District in my car but Till now i did not find anything of what you are mentioning !.

In Many a Circuits, Roads will be deserted for several Kms with no much human presence with dense forests around[ For Ex: Tholpetty - Mananthavadi , Periya-Kuthuparamba, Gundlupet - Muthanga, Muthanga- Sulthan Bathery , Kalpetta - Gudalur etc] which is the beauty of Wayanad and whatever you heard is "NOT AT ALL TRUE" I would say and that too Wayanad is the base for smuggling ammunition into the country sounds like we are talking about some Frontier province and Please try to forget all the Horror stories before you start the trip !!

And Lastly, I am Telling from My personal Travel experiences and Wayanad / Coorg is just 3 hours away for me , From Mysore:) !..

It's absolutely Safe.

Just Curious,Where in Wayanad exactly you are travelling ?.

Hope this helps

I stayed in wayanad in two different occasions (2003 & 2008) for a period of 2 weeks each. :D

I have trekked back and forth and even some inhabited waterfalls and forest areas. No where I have seen any training camps or for that instance, I never felt threatened even when I took a stroll in the middle of the night towards sulthan bathery from my resort.

Forget all those tabloids

Go ahead and enjoy Wayanad. Its a nice place. Try wynberg resorts. Talk to this guy Abishek who will chalk out a perfect plan. Stay in tree house for a night. Get a rejuvenating massage. Trek to Soochipara and meenmutty falls. Go boating in pookot lake. Go see muthanga wildlife santuary

It will be a refreshing trip.

Don't allow anyone to spoil your trip. specially people who draw in a air canvass

Hi Prasad and Velu,

Actually I have bee given a booking at Rain Country Resort for 3n / 4d as a Honeymoon stay and I am accompanied by my spouse.

Thankful to your comments and experiences that Wayanad is safe and it makes me get rid of the erroneous scary talks. Thanks to you both.

As part of my itinerary we plan to visit Pookot lake for boating, Meenmutty waterfalls, Nagarhole and Muthanga wildlife sanctuary (trying to spot and take a snap of a Tiger), Eddakkal caves.

I wish I cud have managed a more luxurious stay at a treetop resort with additional activities and treks. But dont think this time in the midst of recession. But Rain Country Resort is also located at decent location looking forward the hills and valleys covered by lush green forest & have two small streams of rivers inside the resort arena.

Would like to ask a couple of Q,

1) I would be at Kozhikode railway station. Is there easy accessibility of taxi / cabs to drive to Wayanad. Do you have any contacts of driver's / taxi operator who can make my drive safely. Any idea what charges would be for pick-up / drop from Kozhikode railway station to Wayanad and back. Grateful if you can share any contact numbers who can give me a 3 day taxi package at my disposal for sightseeing, pick-up & drop.

Wayand is absolutely safe. Dont ever worry about terrorists, those are just speculations. Kerala is the only place where there has been no terrorist attacks.

If you are coming to wayanad make sure you go to the following places.

Chembra Park
Vyithiri Hill station
Banasura Sagar Dam
Edakkal Caves

The local tourism council offers a trek inside the forest and you can see elephants face to face.

Waynad is absoluteley safe. I have been there couple of times and NO problems what so ever.

Regarding hotels - Vythri resorts is another good option.

To see most of the places, you need cab. Most of these places are 20-30 kms from each other and to reach some of these
places its takes about 1-1.5 hrs even though the distance is less - reason being mountain roads. But, you will see some
nice tea estates aswell on the way.
Meenmutty falls is really good compared to Soochipura falls (which has steps all the way).
But Meenumutty falls is a steep climb down and climb up.
If you are interested in small hiking, after reaching Eadhkal caves, you can still go up. Also, there is another hotel on the way
to Eadhkal caves and was looking good....don't remember the name.
If you are interest in trekking, Chembra peak is good one day trekking place.
Although, its quite tiring, but the view from the top is really good and you can see all the three states from the top
(Kerala / Karnataka and Tamilnadu). I think its the 2nd biggest peak in South India. This trek can be finished in one day. On the way up, you can see a heart shaped lake.
Also, if you have time, you can visit Kurva island.
Try to be early in morning for Muthanga wild life sanctury. Pookot lake is a popular spot for boating.

Your resort guy will be the best guy to arrange for a pick up. I was also picked up twice from Calicut station. Don't get into a car package like having the same car for 3 days[shock] . You will end up paying more for a standing car than a moving car. :D

What I am trying to say is that, most of the times, you have to trek a little and sometimes even trek a lot to see all the places. You may spend 1 hours to 2 hours in edakkal caves, 3 to 4 hours in meenmutty falls. That means, your car will sit idle for solid six hours.

Your resort guy will arrange for a jeep which will workout much cheaper than you think. Ask your resort guy to send a car for you to pick you up from calicut. The road to wayanad, although narrow will be a sight to watch once you catch the uphill road. You can spend sometime in the view point while going.

Kerala and safe drivers are something like north pole and south pole. They are a little reckless but you dont have any choice  . I saw 4 accidents in one day from Wayanad to Calicut. All of them are due to over speed and they were not able to control. So, wear a seat belt. Most probably Indica only will come to pick you as most of the drivers in kerala prefer indica. You should be safe in Indica.

To Amit:-

You try to get taxi from Railway station itself and that will work out very cheap compared to the "So Called Resort Pickup vehicles".

And as Manzey also said, CAB is very important to explore Wayanad and as it's your honeymoon avoid all the heavy trekking kind of places and you could restrict your visits to Pookot lake , Chembra peak base, Lakkidi View point, Thirunelli temple, Banasura Dam [ All of these places needs NO walking at all] and Soochipara waterfalls [ 2 kms walking required To & Fro] and all other famous spots like Edakkal Or other falls involves a bit of Hard walking which will appeal more to Bachelor Groups ..

Hope this helps

oopsss....I missed that you are on honeymoon...then trekking is not an option...unless both of you love it.

I wouldn't worry too much. My wife, 10 year old daughter and self spent a couple of days in Kalpetta three months ago - certainly no probs and the place had a nice feel to it. We hired a car to head down to Kozhikode because we couldn't organise bus tickets in Kalpetta. It was a beautiful drive, even on a drizly day. You'll enjoy the town and Pookot lake was a highlight - watch out for the leeches!

amitsankrani Mar 24th, 2009 15:27

Prasad, Velu and fellow mates.

Thanks for the response and feedback.

Actually the idea of selecting Rain Country Resorts is because I wanted the local Tharavadu kind of feel to be at home in Kerala. Though Kerala being my hometown I have never got a chance to stay at a tharavadu house. This is the reason.

I also got some idea from a friend that pick-up from Kozhikode to Wayand will cost around Rs. 650 to 750 one-way. I asked the same from the resort, and they mentioned Rs. 1,200 for pick-up one-way.

Just scared if such unreasonable expenses pile up my pockets.

Any suggestions of cab rates would be of great help. I am arranging for everything for Wayand (resort accomodation, food, sightseeing places etc...) based from Mumbai but just leaving the cab part.
