Hi everyone!!!

I am going to be travelling in India in July and August this year. For the portion in the south, I have the following loop planned:

Kochi
Nilgiri Hills
Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary
Mysore
Mamallapuram
Thanjavur /Tiruchirapalli
Madurai
Periyar Tiger Reserve
Kerala Backwaters Homestay

I was then going to head back to Kochi and spend a few extra days there. Do you think that an extra 3 days is too much to spend in that area? If not, what suggestion do you have for what to see there in the extra time or what to do?

If you think it's too much, where else would you suggest that isn't too out of the way and will have easy access to Mumbai (as my exit point back home).

Would greatly appreciate any advice!!!

Thanks!

If you want to visit all the places you have mentioned I would suggest this route
Chennai - Mamallapuram - Chennai
Chennai - Tircuchirapalli / Thanjanvur - Madurai
Madurai - Nilgiri Hills
Nilgiri Hills - Mudumalai Wildlife Santuary - Nilgiri Hills
Nilgiri Hills – Periyar Tiger Reserve
Periyar Tiger Reserve – Kerala Backwaters Homestay
Kerala Backwaters Homestay - Kochi

After your intial stay in Kochi, at the start of the trip, see if you love it enough to return for three days. Some do love it...many don't love it that much (three additional days worth)

I assume you are flying in and out of Kochi?

It's hard to say about spending the extra time, without knowing how long you have allotted for the itinerary you described i.e how long approximately do you plan to spend in these areas?

I'd personally say three extra days in Kochi is too long. Sounds like you'll have already spent time there at the beginning of the trip. If you have three extra days, I'd use it in another place or places on the route you've planned, or make a few minor changes to the route to .

Some ideas: Munnar after Periyar? Or from Madurai, skip o/n at Periyar, have just a during-the-day visit (you'll already have seen loads of wildlife at Mudumalai) and then head South to Kanyakamuri then up to Trivandrum and Kerala Coast and its beaches, and from there back up to Alleppey (especially if you're getting overnight houseboat)and/ or Kumarakom backwaters or lakeside accomodation (beautiful area) then finsh up in Kochi.
From Kumarakom or Alleppey you could go straight to airport --about 2 hours' drive-- without spending extra night in Kochi, unless you really want to.

I should have said, either Munnar after Periyar (and from there, head to Kumarokom for backwaters home stay) OR from Madurai, head south to Kanyakumari and beaches, and skip Periyar--it'd be too far out of the way. You'll have already seen wildlife in Mudumalai. For more wildlife, you could go via the Nilgiris (Coonoor/ Ooty etc then to Mudumali then Mysore then Kabini.

A yr ago i went back and forth about a South India route, so i know you must have a zillion questions about what is best. Answer: it's all wonderful!!!!!

I think you should see something else of Kerala instead of a further three days in Kochi.
If you can get to Mumbai by any means then I suggest you travel north to Kannur and see the Drive-in Beach area of Muzhappilangad. There are beach houses at Edakkad. From there you can take the train to Mumbai. If you find the train journey too long, then you could stop off in Goa for a day/night.
