Dear Explorers/Wanders/Seekers...

Need some advice on an upcoming trip. I usually plan well ahead but this time due to an unplanned event, I got a break at work and I'm planning to travel to Southern part of India and explore the Western Coast.

I need help with transportation/logistics planning:

Planning to do a Road Trip in the next couple of weeks (JAN 18th/19th thru 26th/27th) from Varkala, Kerala to Panjim, Goa.

Q1: Can I do the entire trip on a bike? Is it safe enough?

Q2: If so, any suggestions on where I can rent a bike in my starting point: Varkala?

Q3: If you would NOT suggest bike travel, the alternate would be car rental. Any options to rent/drop off in Panjim, Goa?

Q4: If someone has done this trip already (which I suspect as quite a few of you), can you advise on good stopping points (if the towns below are far away for a single stretch)

Here are the points I would LIKE to cover during the trip:

Varkala -->Alappuzha --> Kozhikode --> Wayanad --> Kannur --> Udipi --> Panjim

I know they are a lot to cover in a week.. But that's ideal plan & will see how it goes.

Any other places that I should DEFINITELY check it out? I mean other towns/villages that I should definitely visit over the ones listed above?

its probably cheaper for you to buy a bike like a Royal Enfield and sell it before you leave. I don't any self drive rental allows you this route for pick up and delivery as of now. You could how ever check with Avis.

Q1: If you know how to handle a bike (motorcycle, just to be clear), take some time to adjust to local riding conditions, don't do anything that you wouldn't do on a bike at home (alcohol, dope, no helmet...) then I don't see why not.

Q2: Many renters in and around Varkala. However, the challenge will be to find one that allows you to do a one-way interstate rental. Everything can be arranged ($$) but any renter will either request your passport and/or a hefty guarantee. You need to get that deposit back before leaving. For a long term thing I'd recommend buying/selling an Enfield, however, you don't have a lot of time to waste inspecting bikes/negotiating and handling the paperwork.

Q3: If you rent a car and considering the drop-off location, rent a car with a driver. It'll probably work out cheaper and you don't have to worry about damage/repairs. As it's Kerala, the driver will probably be from Tamil Nadu or Karnataka so try to make sure he knows the area a bit. Negotiate well, make it absolutely clear what is/is not included in the price. Driver accommodation or food shouldn't be you problem but a tip is normal.

Q4: I can't imagine doing that stretch without visiting Kochi. Don't know the area very well, you intend to follow the coastal highway but there are some very nice rides inland too, through the Western Ghats. I once rode from Bangalore-Chikmagalur-Shimoga-Udupi and nature was magnificent. Read up on the site.
