My last trip to Munnar was a car trip. So wanted to have this one out of the town, in the nature. The tea gardens of Munnar is a nice place for a pleasant weekend, strolling among the greenery, watching and listening birds.

We started from Guduvancheri (45 km from Chennai) bus stand on Friday at 10pm. In AC sleeper bus booked from RedBus for ₹1000.

Day 1

Reached Munnar by 10 am. Bus dropped us near KDHP playground. We took auto for main town.₹15 per head. And then took TNSTC bus towards Marayur for our hostel, HappyLife Zostel near Chatta Munnar checkpost, about 2 km from Lakkom falls. It was ₹31 per head for bus. The bus dropped us at Lakkom falls. We took a quick visit there. ₹20 ticket per head. There was not much water in falls, like last time. Then had some hot maggie in a nearby roadside shop. And some small spotted eggs, probably quail eggs. Then we started on our way to Chatta Munnar. There was some awesome view on our way. Found a small green bird on a tree, eating a butterfly. Had hard time shooting it. Then it luckily flew near on a wire. It was a chestnut-headed bee-eater. Then Found the checkpoint. It was a checkpoint for Marayoor sandalwood forest. There were a few houses and shops. Found the hostel easily. We had a 2 beds booked for ₹300. Checked in. Took bath. And had lunch with Kerala meals. Rice, sambar, fried coconut powder, soya chunks curry, some cabbage coconut dish, buttermilk and another curd dish. Then we went out to take a stroll in the tea gardens. The view from above was very nice. A lot of red vented bulbul and red whiskered bulbul were playing around everywhere. Saw a woodpecker, few magpie robins with their nice white fantail. Then returned to our hotel. Took rest on a net swing. The weather was awesome for whole day. Neither warm or cold, but pleasant. Some times cloudy, sometimes mild sunny, sometimes drizzling. Then met some guys on a tree house in there. A lot of birds visit there too. We ordered for 2 plates of fish fry in hostel mess. They fried 2 Tilapia fishes. There in the well, we heard some weird frog sounds. It sounded more like birds. Had dinner with chapati and veg curry.

Day 2

We woke up by 6 am. And went out for downhill this time. Went towards a stream through the tea gardens. Couldn’t find a way to go down. So went back on the street. Then went down on another path through the tea gardens. Came across a bridge on the way. Then there was a place mentioned “Elephant crossing area”. Then went uphill on a path. On our way few times we heard whistling. Then turned back, but couldn’t find anyone nearby. Later realized that it was Malabar whistling thrush, after seeing 2 of them at a place. After sitting at a place up there for a while, we returned to the hostel. Shot a few birds there again. Had lunch by 1:15 pm with Kerala meal again. A few different items. I checked out. My friend stayed there for few more days to visit Munnar, Kodai and few more nearby places. I went out for bus towards Munnar.
The bus stop was just down by the street. Had to wait a while. Got bus by 2 pm. ₹30 this for Munnar. There was some traffic near Lakkom falls. It took about 1 hour to reach Munnar. Bought some chocolates from a shop named Chocolate Kitchen, where we bought last time. Walked up to KDHP playground. and waited for bus to start by 5pm. It was same Thirumal Alaghu travels bus. Bus was nice. had no problem. On way to Chennai there was huge traffic at Devikulam. Had to wait about 1 hour there. But the place had really a nice view. Reached Guduvancheri next day by 7am.

Yes it's really a nice place for trekking. Last time I went there by July, it was raining more often, not a lot though, but it could have been hard to trek at that time. But in May the weather was really pleasant, so this should be a good time for trek.
