Hi all,

Just wondering what the expected cost of a taxi from Trivandrum Airport to Alleppey would be. Am being quoted $114 which seems a bit steep. Can I get a taxi from the airport on arrival and what kind of price should I expect?

As an aside, anyone know how to get tickets from abroad for the Nehru Snake Boat Race? (or would we be able to get them on the day?) Think the non-tourist ones maybe sound better (have emailed Boat race people & rung/emailed the tourist office but no luck there!)

Thanks a million for all the help.

Hi there saoire,

Sounds like you are being charged for the drivers return Journey to Tvndm, which is quite a common practise for taking long journeys in car & driver hire.

I take it your'e thinking Taxi as your arrival into Tvndm must be at an Odd hour.Otherwise there are a number of trains.

IF you have allready decided where you are staying in Allepey then maybe the place you are staying at could get a Ticket for you.

What are taxi costs these days?

I've been seeing some crazy prices and I'm wondering why.

I walked up to a taxi driver in Murudeshwar (Karnataka) and asked how much to take 2 adults and a baby to Jog Falls, wait a few hours then bring us back, his price was Rs1000

Rs1000 = US$ 23.5
Rs1000 = 14
Rs1000 = 16 Euros

This was about 5 years ago, but how much has the fare risen since then.

Murudeshwar to Jog Falls is about 86 km, and at least half of that distance is in the hills (slower travel), then the driver had to wait a few hours for us.

Trivandrum airport to Alleppey is Km 150.

Given that the journey up to Jog falls is a little slower (per km), and that the driver had to wait a few hours for us, it would be difficult to justify a taxi from Trivandrum to Alleppey costing Rs2000 ($47), but maybe costs have gone up, we all know what's happened to the price of petrol/gasoline, and I think the Indian government pulled out of subsidising petrol prices in the last few years.

However, $114 instead of $47, am I missing something?

Thanks for the help everyone.

I think what we will do is get the train (correctly guessed Vandy-we are arriving at 3.30 am) as there is a 5.30 and by the time we get out of the airport and in a taxi there, it hopefully won't be too bad!

Will report how it all went on return!

There's a reasonable chance the 05:30 train will be late, even though it starts from Trivandrum, the train comes all the way from the Nepal border, and during monsoon time there's a fair chance the inbound train could be delayed by many hours.

Go to the train station and look for the train on the notice boards to see if it's departing on time, if so, buy '2nd class SUPERFAST' unreserved tickets (or 2nd class EXPRESS unreserved if train 16326), then go to the train and either travel in the unreserved carriages, or find the man in the white suit, the train ticket guy (TTE) and ask him to upgrade your tickets to the class of your choice, the train won't start to fill up till Ernakulam.

The next train, the Jan Shatabdi at 06:00 will be on time, and will fill up, but some tickets are kept for day of travel sale, these go on sale about an hour before the train is due to depart, so about 05:00.

If you do buy a ticket for the Jan Shatabdi, go back outside the station and look down the road to the left, across the road you'll see a strange circular shaped building, it's the wonderful India Coffee House, I don't know what time it opens, but if it is open, it's a great place for a Masala Dosa and a 'Set (or it is tray) Coffee' (milk & suger seperate), well worth a visit to kill 30-40 minutes.

Thanks a million for that excellent advice Steven- hearing about nice snack options is making me excited about the trip.

One further question if anyone knows- the opening hours of the prepaid taxi booth at Trivandrum Airport- again quotes are high- $18 & not sure what happens if our flight is late if there is a charge!!

Thanks a million.
