I have six days to get from Kochi to Trivandrum and would love some advice about an itinerary that involves relatively short journeys, maybe a night or two in a couple of places, but not constant travel.

In other words I'd rather see a few places and get to know them a bit, than to tick every box.

I love the sea and would be happy to stay by it, but don't really plan on spending time on the beach especially if I can be going to a market, a spectacular palace, checking out a restaurant, taking a cooking class or even perhaps relaxing and getting a massage here and there...

Also I prefer to take a boat as transport rather than for sightseeing or to stay overnight.

I'm willing to hire a driver if/as needed, I am not very good at roughing it but appreciate good value; I like places with character rather than modern, super-efficient hotels; I like peace and quiet (wildlife noises OK) and don't need raucus nighlife, a place where I can read a book, drink a beer (or whatever) and relax before sleeping in a comfy bed would be ideal.

All ideas (even conflicting ones) most welcome !

Thanks Adheeth.

Ideally I'm trying to put together a "logical" itinerary from Cochin to Tvm, which allows me to stop for one or two nights, in one or two places along the way between the two. If that means going inland to somewhere spectacular, and then heading out to the coast again somewhere south of Cochin/north of Tvm, I'm very open to suggestion. Right now I'm thinking of going from Cochin to Kumakoram, then stop at Kollam and Alleppey but I'm still not sure of the timings / distances.

I am interested in markets, palaces, restaurants (the more off the beaten path/local the better), maybe seeing a spice or tea plantation, perhaps some wildlife but not birds (I don't see well)...not so interested in suntanning or beach resorts. Not keen on staying overnight on a boat but happy to take a boat from point a to b.

For authentic Keralan food you could try Frys Village Restaurant, Chitoor Road Ernakulam(Cochin). You could consider going to Tripunithura which is just outside Cochin to visit the Hill Palace and then continue on to Munnar for a day or two to see the Tea Plantations, Top Station and the spice gardens. It is also cooler than the coast as it is the Western Ghats. From there travel to Thekkady and the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. From there head to Alleppey, Kollam and Trivandrum.

You can reach Allepey(Allapuzha) from Cochin(Kochi) ( about 1.5 hrs - 2 hrs) . There is a backwater trip from Allepey to Kollam (Quilon)which takes about 8 hours .
From Kollam you could then head south to Varkala, a popular beach and from there a train ride on to Trivandrum and the beach resort of Kovalam if you like to chill out for a while.

By the way, how long is the drive to Munnar from Cochin?

And where, south of Cochin along the coast, would I be able to rejoin the coast (it's very hard to tell from my map) without going back to Cochin - in other words, are there roads from Munnar or nearby that connect it to Kottayam or environs, or Allepey - somewhere between Cochin and Trivandrum?

Finally - a strange question - I have been asking some of the tour operators about organising a car/driver-guide and hotels.

And although I have specified clearly that I do not want to stay overnight on a boat or take a boat for a long sightseeing trip, they have all included overnight stays on houseboats or long (eight hour) boat trips in their suggested plans.

Do the boats offer something so much more comprehensive than the hotels on land, that the tour operators feel obliged to override my request ? Or (sorry to sound cynical) do they earn that much more organising boat tours?

I am not averse to a short boat trip here and there through the backwaters, if it's for transportation or to be brought somewhere that is not accessible by land. But I have valid personal reasons for not wanting to sleep on a boat, whether anchored or not, and for not wanting to spend too much precious travel time sightseeing via boat.

Thanks again.

Munnar to Cochin - about 3.5 hours.
From Munnar you can drive south to Thekkady and then west to Kottayam.
