Hi,

Thanks for the responses on my earlier post. Now, it's sure i will go to lakshadweep. However, i have a few doubts again (tell you this planning can be a real headache). Pls give in ur expert advices

Do sports have a website? i mean i have been trying their website but it's not accessible. Anyway, i have mail them (got email from Indiamike ). Meanwhile,i came across Pugmarks Holidays. They are offering some packages to different islands, Minicoy, kadmat, kavaratti.
Among these island which is better? i don't want to roam around to different island, instead i would prefer to stay on a single island for 2-3days. Pls suggest

Also, how reliable are these tour operators? I have heard that they show you different pictures and the reality is not the same. Can i do without tour operators, with the following itinerary -
1. Day 1 - Arrive Cochin
2. Day 2 - Arrive at an Island(KADMAT OR AGATTI)
3. Day 3,4 - Stay at the same island
4. Day 5 - back from island to Cochin
5. Day 6 - Reach cochin & fly back home

Pls someone let me know the estimated expenditure on this itinerary (in general). I am expecting around 40-50k(excluding del-coc-del). Mostly, i am concerned about accommodation at Agatti (a bit expensive). Also, if you go without packages then can one get transportation easily between the island. Say, if I stay in agatti and want to go to kadmat. Also, if someone is travelling by ship for first time, can it be really horrible?Seasickness & all. Ship seems economical but are they comfortable?

Finally, do we really need ac during feb?

hi,

i have been to agati in spetember 2008.
ur budget seems to be good for the trip.
i dont remeber exactly but i costed around 18k for me for 5 days stay+food.depends on the season u going.
There is only 1 hotel where u can stay in agati and same place for food also. Its neat and tidy eventhough not so much luxurious. The staff is also very helpful and friendly.
About food - i didnt find the food good,it was just ok,somehow everything seemed to have the same taste. But yes it was neat again.

Regarding the transportation in Agati, its a small island,so if u think u can walk bit,it can be well covered in foot in 3 hours.Autos are the only mode of sight seeing,if u tell the hotel guys they will quickly arrange an auto.I think i paid that auto guy 150 bugs for a 2-3 hours sight seeing around the island.

The only thing for which u need to spare money for (if u not in package) is for water sports. The hotel guys have some water sports like kayaking for free. But rest of them boating, under water diving, speed boat everything needs to be paid seperately. Can cost u around 8k for around 3-4 days.

iF you need anythg more let me know.

Hey sherry that was very very helpful.

I really want to visit lakshadweep but only thing now that i cannot decide is to choose a package or go on my own.

how did you go to agatti, on ship or flight? i would prefer ship (it's cheaper & we both will have a "shipping" experience too ),but is that comfortable, after all you will be on ship for 18-20 hrs. Although i won't mind spending few extra bucks on flight, but if you people can say something about ship journey i will prefer that.

hi,

I wont advise ship since it can be boring sometimes in a local ship to spend 20 hrs.Well again varies from person 2 person.
I took the Kingfisher flight from cochin.

Talk to the hotel guys in lakshadeep as they might have packages as well.Yeah 1 more thing the hotel guys will issue a visa kind of stuff for entering the island.Either they will mail u or they will issue when u arrive at the airport. So better carry ur passport or license.

I cannot answer all your questions but will do my best.
SPORTS website does appear to be down at the moment. You can get to Agatti or Kadmat by ferry. There are different ferries with different standards. The MV Amindivi is a bit basic with reclining seats but I am using it this year to get to Kadmat and I am not worried. The MV Kavaratti is a much bigger ferry and has different classes including first class with cabins (a/c or non a/c). Ferries are much cheaper than the plane and the MV Kavaratti is very comfortable. The ferries doe a circuit of the islands so which one you get can depend on when you travel. Ferries are very stable and as long as it is not very rough weather you will be fine.We have used the ferries and now prefer them to the flight. Sherry is right the food is a bit bland on Agatti as it is on Kadmat but it is wholesome and you won't starve. You could got from Agatti to Kadmat by ferry or take a high speed ferry (more expensive). You do not need a/c in Feb. You get a sea breeze that will keep your room cool. If you plan to go for 2/3 nights I would suggest staying on one island rather than travel around. As Sherry said you will need a permit to go to the Lakshadweep and as far as I know you may need a tour operator to get it for you. Hope that helps.
The islands are beautiful so pictures are probably accurate.

Clive,

I called pretty much everyone about a cruise package on the MV Kavaratti but they told me that everything is sold out for the dates I'm interested in - Dec. 25 to Jan 2nd. Do you know of any other Lakshadweep cruises that I could book?

This period is extremely busy as many people from Lakshadweep are going to and from the islands for Christmas and New Year.
I have found another organisation that might have some places held on the MV Kavaratti.
Samudram Holiday package.

The only other possibility I can think of is to try and get a flight to Agatti (not cheap), stay there and maybe transfer to one of the other islands by high speed boat.
Good luck.

Just a idea :-)

In your budget , you can go Havelock(@Andaman & Nicobar) and will enjoy more then Lakshadweep / Kovalam / Pondicherry.
