My South India Trip (Delhi – Madurai – Rameshwaram – KKumari – Trvndr – Cohi-Munnar)

Delhi – Madurai – Rameshwaram – Kanyakumari – Trivandrum – Cohin - Munnar

Delhi – Madurai ; Delhi - Rameshwaram

Madurai

Transport
To reach Madurai from Delhi, the best options are train to Chennai and then from Chennai two trains to Rameshwaram Second option what we followed was by air, and fortunately I got very cheap tickets upto Madurai, even less than delhi – Chennai airfare. Otherwise I had to book tickets upto Chennai and then train from there with more time. The airfare upto Chennai was 4200 – 4400 and upto madurai I got @ Rs.3800/-. From Madurai, rameshwarm by road is 3 hrs journey.

The flight reached madurai at 7 pm and there is only one pvt taxi operator with fixed rates for different locations. We stayed at Company guest house, Gandhi Nagar, near Anna Bus Stand, a good locality with lots of good high rise hotels around.

Restaurant / Fooding

The best of food during our entire journey we had was at Madurai at Meenakshi Bhawan, Anna Bus Stand, Gandhi Ngr. It’s a very very popular restaurant with huge rush and staff working like a machine. And the faith of ppl visiting there itself speaks in volume about the quality and taste. The best thing I liked was that It served good north Indian food tooo

Meenakshi Temple

Meenakshi temple is just 10 min drive from Gandhi Nagar with good connectivity of buses. Auto charges Rs.40/-. It was Sunday, hence we had to face huge rush n long ques in the temple for darshans. A very famous and good temple dedicated to Maa Parvati (Meenakshi) and Lord Shiv and Lord Ganesh.

Rameshwaram

Transportation

We caught taxi upto Rameshwaram. Started at 12 and reached at 3. Normally taxi ppl charge for up and down or even if its drop the charges are same( 2400/- = @Rs.6/- p/Km x 400 kms up & down) But with the god grace, I came across one good person Mr. Radhakrishnan (+919443568192) from Madurai, who is owner, running taxis, having 4 types of vehicle (Tata Indica, Tempo Traveller etc) and who charged me Rs.1700/- including toll tax Rs.40/- for indica which I think is dam cheap for a comfortable and convenient drive from yr living place/hotel to hotel for 4 pax. The second option one can follow is to book a seat in Tempo traveler which leaves madurai by 8 am daily and the cost per seat is Rs.200/- . And ofcourse the last option is to catch Govt. Bus.

Stay

I strongly recommend Hotel Sri Sarvana. Which is 150 mtrs from the main entrance of temple and behind it flows ocean. The contact details of Hotel Sri Sarvana are : 04573-223367, 09976614467.I also recommend, newly constructed Agrawal Dharamshala which is next to Hotel sarvana but was not known to me. The rooms are good, neat and clean and even the charges are low.

Temple :

As it’s a ritual to take holy bath, in ocean and of 22 kunds situated within the temple, before having darshanam of lord Rameshwaram. The official general category rates are very less per well / kund (Around Rs.25/-) But you will find lot of people standing with a bucket just opp entrance of temple. Their rates are fixed. Rs.70/- per person for taking you without line and letting you have buckets of holy water. JUST PLEASE ENSURE that if you are in group he doesn’t uses one bucket of well / kund water and sprinkles water upon whole group instead he uses one bucket of holy water for each person for which u are paying him Rs.70.00. If you don’t act smartly they will act and just sprinkle the drops instead of pouring bucket of holy water of 22 separate kunds. The kunds were created by Lord Rama before performing pooja and with his powers he created the holy Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati rivers there and many others. Hence their sanctity is beyond description as it’s the first lingam of lord established with proper rituals by the other lord himself. Unique and Great na!!

For darshanam, one is general que and other is VIP. General no fees, VIP they charge Rs.50.00 per head and you will be allowed to sit at the doorstep of Rameshwaram and opportunity to see the lingam very clearly.

In morning, daily sputnik lingam is worshiped which was presented by Adi Shankracharya to Rameshwaram Trust. Though they say mani darshanam and ppl get confused about it being Mani of Nag but its Sputnik Lingam. I recommend that if you wish u can have VIP darshan at some other time but pl don’t prefer or have Rs.50 slip for the morning as u wont be able to see the original lingam but only one small sputnik lingam.. So just have darshans thru general line which is less crowded infact at that time.

Just prefer to have Misri Prasad (Rs.5/- per packet) instead of full packet as other items can smell if you reaching late back to home.

Local Sight Seeing

You can have darshans of other important places in and around Rameshwaram through taxi or autos

Taxi – Rs. 600/- - 800/-
Autos – Rs.250/- for local temples within rameshwaram, But if you wish to go to Vibhishan’s temple its Rs.300/- which is at the outskirt of rameshwaram. And if you wish to go to “Check post” / Dhanushkodi and also seee the Indian ocean, the charges are Rs.350/- which is another 5 kms ahead Vibhishan temple. But on negotiation they will charge Rs.300/- upto check post. This is the last point beyond which autos do not go but jeeps go and which charge Rs.70/- p/pax.

I strongly recommend to have auto for local s/s in rameshwaram upto check post. You will enjoy the journey and place.

Shopping

Obviously the major variety u will get around the ocean is “Shanks” or the items found from ocean. Though there are lots n lots of shops selling these items. But I recommend the Shop of Kalam’s (yes it’s the shop owned and runned by the brothers of Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam, the ex-Hon’ble President of India) and it’s a sure shot that every auto or taxi man is going to take u there. Its a big shop with lots n lots of variety. secondly, if there is paucity of time and u wish to have some items, then I recommend govt. shop. The prices are economical and the shop is just opposite the entrance of temple on right side ( Sethu Samundaram Project – Coastal Community Development Prog Beneficiaries Sales Centre, Sethu Illam, East Car Street, Run by Heed Trust).

Restaurants / Fooding

We have our lunch / dinner at three four places. But, I strongly recommend Agarwal Dharamshala for breakfast and fooding. You will get the best of stuffed parathas at a reasonable cost of Rs.15- 20/- and dahi Rs.5/- They also provide packed foods for train journey but u will have to book in advance.. Other hotels provide only south Indian foods.

Rameshwaram – Kanyakumari

If you are in big group, fix up tempo traveler.
One Govt bus is in the morning around 7 am and other in evening. Run time 9 hrs.

The best option is to catch direct train from rameshwaram – kanyakumari which runs twice or trice in a week. Timings Departure – 2045 hrs ; Arrival – 0400 hrs kanyakumari

Kanyakumari

Stay :

I strongly recommend Hotel Maadhini (04652-246787). Its very big and good hotel. All sight seeing points at walkable distance.

Local Sight Seeing :

Taxi and autos plying
Vivekanad Memorial - Catch the ship, ticket Rs.____ ,
Kanyakumari Temple
Sunset and Sunrise point
Wax Museum & Amusement Park – Auto charges Rs.40/- one way. Entry ticket of wax museum Rs.50/- p/pax. If I am not wrong Rs.200 /- entry ticket for amusement park. First wax museum in India with statues of Amitabh Bacchan, Shahrukh khan and others.
A good place to visit.

It was raining hence we could not enjoy the local sight seeing at Kanyakumari

You will find lots of local salesman selling misc items with pearl malas and other items. You can purchase pearl malas at Rs.15/- per mala though they will start with Rs.100/- per. Don’t go for gold plated chains at all. Branded duplicate watches around Rs.100/- per watch though they may start from 400-500/- per watch.

Fooding / Restaurant

Though there are few restaurants. Marwadi restaurant good. Punjabi dhaba – very worst
I strongly recommend to have food at Hotel Maadhini’s restaurant which serves very good food at most reasonable rates. At first instance I thot it might be costly but I was surprised to seee that its economical and good food, Punjabi or south Indian. You can also enjoy drinks in separate bar there.

Kanyakumari - Trivandrum

My dedicated efforts worked as I wanted to have a taxi upto trivandrum at the most reasonable rate. Normal rates Rs.1400/- I was looking for a taxi charging Rs.700/- as lots of taxi going empty after dropping customers from trivandrum to kanyakumari. But we were lucky to have one taxi through a gentleman who stands outside hotel maadhini with his white ambassador. We got a taxi (big- indigo) at Rs.800/- for drop upto Trivandrum - Pattam, including one local sight seeing point of kanyakumari situated at outskirts which was Suchindram temple dedicated to lord Bhrama Vishnu Shiv and 18 ft tall statue of lord hanuman. Don’t miss this powerful temple. Had we caught auto to visit this temple, it would have costed Rs.250/- from kanyakumari.

The contact details of taxi owner cum driver is : (Mr. Murgan, +919447205145). He is a quite decent person and very nice gentleman.

Trivandrum

Local Sight seeing:

Padhmanabham temple
Palace Museum
Kovalam Beach
Shanmugam Beach

Mr. Murgan charged Rs.900/- for all these points and normally even if u catch auto they will also charge 600/- up and down. But u get a good comfortable car at yr disposal. And also you can enjoy good market around temple with all branded showrooms on the main road. A very big market with big showrooms on both sides of roads.

First we visited the temple dedicated to lord Vishnu but due to its compulsory rituals, a man can only enter the temple only after he takes out his pant and wears dhoti provided from there with no shirt on top. Hence we didn’t went inside. Also we didn’t went inside palace museum which is next to temple. The reason being it was nearing evening and earlier in the afternoon it rained heavily. We immediately proceeded to kovalam beach.. We were lucky to enjoy the sunset evening. Soon we noticed it was about to rain. The moment we started our journey towards Shanmugam beach, there were thunderstorm rain, hence cud not get down at shanmugam beach (which is just opp trivandrum airport) and I think good place than kovalam if u wish to enjoy the local crowd and food jaults like Juhu beach.

Fooding / Restaurant

The place where we were staying was Pattam, there was one very very good restaurant namely Aryan Jyoti, a very popular restaurant next to LIC Div Office., Pattam. The food was very good, tasty and at most reasonable rates. Don’t Miss it

Trivandrum - Cochin

We caught train (jan shatabdi) starting at 6 am reaching 9 am cochin.

Cochin

We stayed at Kaloor, 3-4 kms from main jetty.
There are lots of good restaurants. We had our food at Hotel Meenu’s. Very popular restaurant and the food was too good.

Local Sight seeing :

Autos and frequent buses easily available upto main jetty.

Its best to book KTDC cruise tour starting at 2.30 pm till 5.30 pm.Places covered harbour, old cochin – jew place, fort cochin, fishing nets.First European church and the place where vasco da gama was buried. The best thing about this tour is that guide accompanies you. But may be you may get bore also with this tour as it only takes u around to memorial places but at same time gives glimpse of cochin from far in the sea and opportunity to see harbour from close.

If you wish to enjoy backwater trip. I advise you to get down at Allepy while coming from trivandrum. And have a tour upto cochin. Due to heavy rains and time paucity we dropped the idea as we wanted to cover Munnar.

Cochin - Munnar

Munnar a Good lush green place. With lots of tea estates. You find yourself amidst a new paradise. I recommend if you planning to visit kerala don’t miss Munnar.

How to reach / Transportation :

Since we were 4 pax, I strongly recommend taxi. I was lucky to come across article on net by one person sharing his travel experience and who had also shared about one Taxi owner Mr. Anil (09847377479) I also vastly searched net but I think I was lucky to book a taxi through Mr. Anil whose rates are very very reasonable. The taxi was with me for 2 nights and 3 days costing Rs.3200/- for 450 kms covering munnar and pick up at hotel from cochin and drop at cochin airport. It included all toll tax and driver batta. The driver was deepu a young chap who was very nice good boy, a perfect honest gentleman.

Though it was continuously raining for the past 3 days. But the day we were to move to munnar the weather got clear. We started our journey in the morning at 7 am, stopping at 2-3 points on way at waterfalls and reached at 12.

Stay:

Hotel Munnar mansion, a subsidiary of hotel munnar inn. Munnar Mansion addresss : Near BSNL, Nadayar Road, Ph.4865232777, 09495119000, 9495113000, 9495112000, webpage: www.munnarmansion.com . T...royalwings.net)

The charges are very reasonable and stuff very good. We had got packed Bhindi masala (Rs.50/-) and gobhi masala (Rs.50/-), Rotis (Rs.10/- each) (though the gobhi was like pakodas but very tasty).I strongly recommend either to enjoy yr lunch / dinner at Royal Wings or get the food packed and you can have the same at airport if your flight is around 3.30 - 4 and u have to be there at 1-2pm. Else u will be compelled to have only stuffed parantha in the airline costing rs.150/- whereas lunch for three here would cost around Rs.160-180/-

My intention for this round trip was to include one holy place, also to see the last southern tip of India, beaches, capital city / harbour of kerala and above all to be admist the hill station eg. Munnar. All in one package and in a weeks time. You can accordingly add on days as per yr wish. My trip started on Saturday and ended next Sunday and I enjoyed the common wealth games vacation of kids covering all the imp places of south India.

Overall Remarks (8days/7 Nights)

Hello!

Excellent first post on the thread. I am planning to do this circuit in the reverse direction in late January '15. I am travelling with my spouse and a 2.5 year old kid. My current plan reads as below-

Day 1 - Reach Kochi in morning. Roam around in Fort Kochi

Day 2 - Off to Munnar. Stay overnight
Day 3 - Munnar. Off to Alleppey in evening
Day 4 - Alleppey to Kollam Boat trip. Catch the sunset at Kollam/Varkala and stay overnight at Trivandrum

Day 5 - Roam around in TVM - Padmanabhanswamy temple. Off to Kanyakumari
Day 6 - Roam around in Kanyakumari and leave for Rameswaram
Day 7 - Darshan+Sightseeing at Rameswaram. Off to Madurai in evening
Day 8 - Temples at Madurai

I think this plan is quite packed and I have left very little buffer. However, I am flexible with Days 2, 3 and 4 and the plan could be altered based on your inputs. Please let me know what you think of this!
