Hi,

I am just back from a three day trip to Munnar. The trip was totally unplanned except for the train reservation from Chennai to Coimbatore. My wife and I were planning for a suitable travel for our second wedding anniversary. Our anniversary falls on Aug 30, but I have a set of job related releases fro August mid through September end, so any leave then is highly unlikely. So we finally decided on the dates July 7(night train to coimbatore) to July 11 for our dream destination Munnar. We booked the train tickets till Coimbatore two months back.
Coimbatore is my wife's place, so we took a little nap after reaching there by Nilagiri express sharp at 4.20 AM on July 8 (day 2).I previously enquired the bus timings to Munnar from Ukkadam and found it to be 8.15AM.We had a quick tiffin at my in -laws place and started to Ukkadam which is a km from my in laws place. The bus to Munnar arrived sharply at 8 AM and started by 8.15 AM. The bus ticket costed Rs 77 per head (express bus). The bus took the most sceneic route Coimbatore - Pollachi - Udumalmet - Chinnar wild life sanctuary - Munnar. The bus took exactly 6 hours to reach Munnar.

We reached Munnar by 2.15 AM and the cold breeze welcomed us.I held several discussions in various forums in India mike and found JJ cottage to be suitable place for staying.A special thanks to Nomadic Boo for saying that he was able to spot book it in January a year back and for Vandy who said I will be able to do spot booking this time of the year.JJ cottage is very near to KSRTC bus station.Tamilnadu buses stop at Munnar town and an auto costs Rs 20 for reaching JJ cottage from there.

Mr Jayan of JJ cottage is a nice guy and showed us a very neat room.He wanted Rs 500 for that and we tried to bargain it for Rs 350 and finally settled for Rs 450 per night inclusive of all taxes. We enquired JJ cottage in the last week of June and were told to call up again in July first week. Then we decided to spot book and were lucky to get it.The rooms are too good and spotless with a TV.

For site seeing we took a bike for rent from Mr Chandran. He gave a Glamour for Rs 350per day.We bargained and got it finally for Rs 300 per head.Day 3 (July 9), we filled petrol for Rs 200 and set out to top station.Top station is in Theni district,Tamilnadu and is the highest point in Kodaikanal - Munnar escape road. The route to top station is very scenic with tea estates all through. The various spots enroute are Madupatty dam (boating), echo point, gundale dam, cattle grass lands.

We came back to Munnar on 3.45PM and had a fantastic lunch in Annaporna restaurant. It is located opposite to Munnar rope way station/Kannan devan hills plantations company engineering department.Annaporna is a specialist in Punjabi/Rajasthani/Gujrati food. This is what their board says.we also found they are authentic in these styles. One time, they even rounded off the bill Rs 138 to Rs 135. I was appalled.Whats happening.I have never heard round off for restaurant bills.

Day 4 (July 10) was reserved for Coimbatore direction in the same bike Hero Honda Glamour. We visited Eravikulam National park.Their safari takes you inside the park and you find Nilgiri Tahr every where.Almost 50% of the world population of this endangered species are found here. After this we had a nice bath in Lukkom falls. The water was icy cold.We got Rs one sachets of Navrata oil (thanda thanda cool cool) and plunged into the falls. It was very rejuvenating. Lukkom falls also has locker facility and neat toilets. The day again ended with a tiffin at Saravana Bhavan (in Munnar Town for Tamil food).

On day 5, July 11 we started from Munnar and got into a KSRTC bus till Udumalpet which starts at 10.30(rs 50.50) and from Udumalpet till Coimbatore (rs 20).

Important information are as below:

A correction: the second bus from Coimbatore till Munnar is at 3.30 Pm and not at 3.30 AM.In sense it is at 3.30 afternoon.

Rizwan _ I have quited the contact of JJ cottage in my trip report above. Please refer that.Though I visited recently I dont think quoting my name will be of any help as I dont visit regularly. If you are planning to visit in this off season (monsoon), I feel you can take the risk of spot booking.JJ is very cheap and Mr jayan was not interested when I started bargaining. He quoted Rs 500 and I wanted it for Rs 300.He started saying things like when I come to Chennai, get me a room for Rs 300, can you?.I finally settled for rs 350.The point is a lot of non Indians still visit Munnar in rainy season and hence the cottage is not completely vacant. But when you visit , if it is the case (cottage completely vacant), you can have a fair bargain even down to rs 350-400.have a nice trip. Also the off season in Munnar ends with September. So see if you can slighlty advance your trip to make it cheap.
