You can spend 2-3 days within the Periyar sanctuary and there are endless treks available there periyartigerreserve.org also in the surrounding plantation areas near Vandanmedu and Anakara, as well as along the route going to Munnar.

If you are interested, skim through my trip report for these areas at http://www.indiamike.com/india-artic...uide-may-2008/

Dear Snonymous

I did a bit of research and decided that we can do both Munnar and Periyar. We are a group of 5 now, and would like to hire a car with driver. Could you give me the contact details of the travel agency/tour operator you booked with?
Also, have a look at this idea of itinerary and tell me what you think, if you have a minute to spare:
day 1
Cochin to Munnar: tea plantation and surrounding hills
day 2
Munnar: Munnar-Marayoor-Chinnar road trekking or chinnar sanctuary and overnight there
day 3
Munnar(or Chinnar) to Periyar
day 4
Periyar early morning trek
day 5
Kumarakom and backwaters
day 6 - 7
beach...still have to think where...have you got any suggestions
day 8
departure from Thiruvananthapuram...back home to the cold winter

Thank you for your help so far!

I also enjoyed your elephanta island thread

It made me want to go there even more...I will only have 2 days in Mumbai though...so I'm still thinking....

Sounds fine. In Periyar if you do the first boat ride as well, you will be sure to spot a lot of wildlife from the boat, and the boat ride is enjoyable in its own right.

How much time it will take from Munnar to Periyar/Kumili ? Provided I go by car ? Can I start from Munnar in the morning, reach Periyar, and take a cruise trip in Periyar Lake in the same afternoon or have to pre-book the cruise ? Provided I go in September .

Munnar to Periyar is around 100 kms by road and you may start your journey early morning so that you could enjoy full day.

You may book Periyar lake boating in advance to avoid any last minute non-availability. Please read more here.

Usually the cruise is very popular and there is always a rush. To be on the safe side, its better to do an advance booking. Online booking is there which will be convenient.

But the cruise is best done in the morning 7:00 AM slot.

Exclamation

I went through all the past posts in this thread, and thought of mentioning my query here,

I will be staying 2nights in munnar , and next 2nights in Aleppy. We will have a dedicated car for these days. As far as my knowledge through net, we will be crossing Periyar in beween these 2 places, but thought of not staying, due to time constraint. can you please suggest if there is any place we should/may cover when we cross this area in daytime.
Please suggest.

Another question, though a bit off topic from the thread, I would like to to stay in kovalam or varkala, which one will you advise, and hotel detail if possible , around 2000. Please.

Thank you so much in advance.

I think there isn't much for 2 nights in allepey. (If you haven't booked as yet)
You could spend that night in periyar/ thekkady - evening martial arts demonstration and morning boat ride should be worth the stay. Otherwise you could visit the elephant camp enroute.
Sar Pass Trek , Rohtang, Munnar, Badrinath Kedarnath, Vaishnodevi, Goa, VOF, Kedarkantha, Kuari Pass, Brahmatal Trek
