I will be looking to travel from Kochi to Munnar and was thinking initially to do it via bus which my guidebook claims would take around 4hrs although it doesnt give a price. 2000Rs for a taxi (quaoted from the Alleppey to Munnar thread - im guessing it will be in the same region from Kochi?) seems reasonable considering the distance - thats about 30quid between two of us. However im assuming the bus is very much cheaper - has anyone done this journey and have any reccommendations or advice?

The buses are much cheaper. You could take a government bus from the Ernakulam Bus stand for about around 50rs and a private coach for less than 200 bucks. I just did a day trip to munnar from kochi, but in my own vehicle and could cover most of the areas in a day.

I have a plan to visit Munnar from Cochin. At first I was also thinking to go there by bus, find an accommodation and tour through a local tourist office. Yesterday I got an offer from Inspire Kerala Agency, 2n/3d was 7000Rs including accommodation, driver, sightseeing and meals. Has anyone used a local travel agency for such trip? Would it be comfortable, safe and normal price? Any other suggestions on which agency to use maybe?
thanks in advance,
K.

hey ,i have used inspire kerala.i did entire kerala program with them.thier price quote is ok.thier drivers are also punctual.make sure you discuss the places you want to visit before in hand because the drivers are hesistant to take you any place that isnt on the itenary, you dont have that flexibility.the hotel we stayed in munnar was also good(booked through inspire kerala).

Kersti & Santos
We also did our Kerala trip last year with inspirekerala, they were value for money and we certainly got what we paid for. Santos, we went exactly where we wanted to as we had made it clear right from the beginning that we were not interested in their suggested itinerary. In fact, I must thank their drivers for showing us some truly beautiful off track places.

About Rs 7000, Kersti, you could check the hotel website to compare rates, and do not hesitate to ask for a better deal if you feel the quoted price is high.

Undoubtedly buses are much cheaper, but if you have a car at your disposal you can stop where you want to en route, and believe me there are so many scenic places you will want to stop and enjoy. We took a whole day from Periyar to Munnar - a journey that ought to take just 3 hours. And likewise from Munnar to Kothamangalam! Kerala is so very scenic, it would be a pity not to be able to stop where you want to.
