I am planning for a North Kerala 8N 9D trip coming May and have made a draft of the itinerary which looks like this.

Day 1 :- Arrive Cochin in the morning. Visit Fort Cochin in the evening.

Day 2 :- Leave for Munnar early morning.Sightseeing in the evening.

Day 3 :- Full day in Munnar

Day 4 : - First half of the day in Munnar. Leave for Thekkady in the afternoon.

Day 5: - Full day in Thekkady.

Day 6: - First half of the day in Thekkady. Depart for houseboat experience in Alleppey in the afternoon .

Day 7:- All Alleppey

Day 8: - Kumarakom if possible and back to Cochin in the night.

Day 9: - Next day visit Cherai beach. Take a late evening flight back to Mumbai.

Please suggest if this is a decent enough itinerary
I cant make up my mind with the places to visit for sightseeing an each location (thanks to overwhelming info in guide books) as we will not be spening more than 2 days at any destination.

Staying two nights in each location seems a good idea to me, that way you won't overexhaust yourself.

Moving on from Thekkady, are you planning to get on the houseboat the same evening? I'm just asking, because houseboats are usually moored for the night at sunset and don't do any cruising before the next morning. The overnight trips tend to start at noon and finish around 10 AM the following day, I think.

Thekkady and Kumerakom are both on the same side of the lake; I'd guess that the drive from Thekkady to Kumerakom is quite a lot less than to Alleppey. You could probably book a houseboat to take you from Kumerakom to Alleppey, perhaps making it an overnight experience. You can certainly travel by motor boat from one to the other.

I have no idea whatsoever of the houseboats. Though there is abundance of info about these on websites they offer me no hint to how do I fit one in my itin ?

I know Kumarakom Alleppey Cochin Quilon (sp?) are the places to take these and I would be taking one in Alleppey or Kumarakom , but what are the things I can do we with a houseboat and where can I take it ? Sorry to be so dumb

Thanks

Well, no... good question!

...and I've never been on one, so I'm not the best person to answer it! .

One thing, though; you don't have to take a houseboat to get a tour of the backwaters or a trip across the lake. There are motor launches, which are sort-of the water equivalent of taxis, which will take you on a tour, or simply ferry you from one place to another --- or both. I've done the 5-hr trip from Kumerakom to Kochi twice, by launch, just because I like boats. I spent my birthday, last year, aboard such a launch, partly for the boating experience, partly to visit a number of people that were more easily accessible by boat than by car.

Just as there is the water-born equivalent of a taxi, so there is of a bus: there are large government boats that are the principle way of getting around for many people in that area.

So, a houseboat... You get all the advantages of a launch, along with staff to look after you and feed you --- and accommodation, of course, although not everyone stays overnight.

There are probably numerous places, apart from the main centres of this trade. It should certainly be possible to board one in one place and be dropped in another.

I hope someone who knows more will be along soon...
