We stayed in the Leela in Kovalam and expected high prices for food and drink. What was disappointing was the price of a beer is now the same as in London.

Lighthouse beach whilst much cheaper could not offer the same standard of food we had at the leela. What was concerning is the fish on display outside the restaurants and no sign of any ice to keep it fresh. A food poisoning disaster waiting to happen, with the flies and rubbish which is on the beach.

India has always appealed to me as a cheap place to go on holiday but it seems inflation is rampant, that coupled with a weaker pound really hits us brits in the wallet.

We just returned from a trip to Kerala which included a stay at Kovolam Beach.
It is fair to say that at the hotel we were both staying 'marked' up the kingfisher and the other spirits (a king fisher costing 125rps) whilst this is expensive compared to certain non touristy areas and certainly in parts of south Goa, we could still get a Kingfisher for 90 rps at some restaraunts on the Lighthouse Beach. This was more than not - acompanied by excellent food. a number of the small eatery's behind the beach were even cheaper.
Pre Christmas Kovolam was very quiet, much more than recent years and all who I spoke with are suggesting that the financial downturn is the reason - that and holiday companies closing down flights from both the UK and Scandinavia. If it continues and the majority of holiday makers continues to come from domestic India I am sure that prices will fall in line with demand and once again you will be able to buy a beer for 50p. In the meantime we will continue to fly to India, our chosen holiday destination for the past seven years, and support the tourist economy throughout this tough period where ever we can.

Even at 1.60 for a beer - it's still 'cheap'..

Think on..
