Hi, We plan to travel to Kerela on the 13th of November for 4 nights, staying on the river boats! Can anyone inform of what the weather's normally like here at that time? Is it monsoon time?

Weather will be OK. Monsoon should be well and truly over.

However in the Tropics there is allways the possibility of a shower or two, usually at night.

Hello Mclowes and welcome to indiamike.

The collection of informed and experienced members at indiamike is more valuable than any travel agency, and they have more info than you could ever need, they can really make your trip, and very often answer questons you didn't think of asking.

Give more info and you'll get great advice.

(I'll be arriving in Kerala as you're leaving).

Thanks for the info!
Can anyone also recommend where best place to stay? We're Arriving in Kerela from Goa and want to stay for 3 nights in a hotel and 1 night on a river boat. Any suggestions on which area is nicest to stay and what's the best way to book a river boat?

I too will be in Kerala then (11 to 18 November).

There are lots of threads on here about booking Kerala houseboats (try Kerala Backwaters - a cruise on budgets) and a couple of good journals (http://www.keralaindiatravel.net/ker...l-guide-part-1) that IMers have linked too.

Where is "nicest" to stay depends on what you are looking for. There are some upmarket boutique hotels in Cochin, and one called the Raheem Residency in Alleppey that a friend of mine recommended. The hills up near Munnar have tea plantations, lush scenery and waterfalls. And then there are beaches further south (about which I know nothing).

I'll be staying 2 nights each in Cochin, Munnar and at the Green Palms homestay on the backwaters as well as spending a night on a houseboat.

Depending on what time you arrive in Kochi(Cochin)if its late in the day or night time,I suggest you stay O'Night in Cochin then take a cab next morning to Allepey, 1 hr away.

Couple of Mid range Hotels near the Ernakulam train station are Yuvrani Residency & Abad Metro or even Grand Hotel.

Go to the the Main Houseboat Jetty and have a look at some boats before deciding, don't let them rush you.Approx cost for a 1 - 2
bedroom Houseboat with A/C for an O'Night cruise is 5,000rps,inclusive of All meals. Its best to try and get down to the Jetty by 9 - 10 am.The O'night cruises usually try and depart by Noon and return by mid morning next day.

If you go through the Houseboat threads you will see that I also Highly recommend the Country Boat cruise into the smaller
canals, hired by the hour for the entire boat(300rps per hour, NOT per person)I usually hire for 3-4hours.

Go through the Hotels section for accom reviews, my personal favourite in Allepey is Malayalam Resort Homestay, located right on the canal waters edge, only contactable by phone, call them
as soon as you arrive in Cochin. They have just added 2 new upstairs rooms which look absolutely wonderfull.

For a Houseboat and Country Boat look at the link below, young guy Praveen is pretty helpfull, www.naturevisionkerala.com

Hope that helps.
