As long as you do not start promoting tours and travel companies for personal gains, you are perfectly entitled to name them. If you have had a bad experience with one particular houseboat operator, what better way to ensure that others don't meet the same fate, by naming and shaming these people?

Infact, if you are a regular on IM, one would expect you to do it as that is entirely the purpose of such forums.

I just tried posting my own bad experience with a houseboat company based in Alappuzha but was unable to because of forum rules. So, because I can't name the specific company, I just wanted to warn fellow travelers that during peak season a higher end houseboat company will rent boats from other companies and you don't know what you're going to get -- our boat looked nothing like the pictures on the website and we were charged 15,000 rupees more than another company was charging for the exact same boat. The houseboat itself had stained towels, broken lights in the bedrooms, no A/C during the day.

Had the experience simply been about the poor conditions of the houseboat, we would’ve tolerated it and moved on. But the worst was yet to come. When we went to the owner to tell him about the conditions of the boat, he immediately started yelling and accusing us of trying to cheat him. He wouldn't listen to a word of reason. We decided to go to the local tourism police and settle the matter there. When he saw us getting in our car, though, he ordered his staff to lock the front gate. We were locked inside the jetty compound for one hour. We finally settled by paying the fair market price on the boat — the one we were given, not the one we’d booked.

I don’t wish to ruin this company's reputation or slander the owner, and I’m not working for a rival houseboat company. I’m simply a tourist who hopes to save other tourists from the hostile and aggressive treatment my family and I suffered.
