Kerala is flooding in an unforeseen way. Loss of lives and properties are not yet known. Are we paying the price of misdirected concepts of developments and the environmentally ignorant policies of the government and people of the state? Of course this is a tragic moment of realization of the follies the people and the government have committed in the past. Unauthorized constructions and encroachment and clearing of forests with the connivance of authorities and powerful politicians who wanted only power and easy money and now the common people are paying the price in a tragic way. Will the politicians and authorities open their eyes and be willing to correct their mistakes in future? Will the government have a rethink on Gadgil Report which has been watered for political gains?

I just read that the Cochin airport has suspended operations until August 26.

I don't think that loss of few hundred innocent citizens is going to water down the politicians greed! After all their 'sacrifice' of staying in public life is worth more than that!!

I am not sure how much the judiciary can do, corruption has not left it even that untouched..

I know this is the wrong time to be churlish, but it hasn't stopped me before and I don't think it is going to stop me now .

What I want to know is what happened to female equality now. Why do many women want women and children to be rescued first.

Of course I agree with children getting priority.
Lord, Grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of those people I had to kill because they pissed me off.

Kerala flooding -rivers and dams

I'm sure all forces and other agencies are at work there. But the situation seems hopeless for too many. Unbelievable loss of life and property.

It was absolute hell for us here three years ago, but at least we had a house to clean up afterwards. Not many in Chennai had to survive fast-moving water, which is like a bulldozer. And the landslides.

We are not supposed to advertise charities here. But how to contribute? One can buy stuff on Amazon*, which seems odd but might be practical. Notwithstanding suspicion of govt organisations, I made a small contribution to the chief minister's fund. Hopefully every little counts and it all adds up.

Please, everyone, find some way and give something. And we can give cash without even taking our feet off the desk, let alone getting them wet and our hands dirty.

*There's a photo banner link on amazon.in front page.

I already donated to the CMDRF a few days ago, but I reckon that might not be enough. So decided to pool money with a few friends and buy relief materials and drop them off tomorrow at collection centers in TVM city.

I dug this out -

http://www.freepressjournal.in/analy...ignals/1337663.

Many media sources are quoting this now. Very sad.

I pinged several friends in ernakulam area and they said situation is fine in cities but in Interior it's very bad. They're helping in camps themselves where they can. NDRF is present in some places. In others local NCC is helping. A friend posted this picture via message (garbage washed up by the water), also said send money but not food item as there is surplus in few parts and due to no power it will get spoilt.

It made CNN news here.

A friend in Varkala posted pics of helicopters with rescued people landing on the helipad on the clifftop.

@ Nick-H- We are not supposed to advertise charities here................I made a small contribution to the chief minister's fund. Hopefully every little counts and it all adds up.
Every little counts......as the rehabilitation of people and the reconstruction of the damaged houses, roads etc. will be a big challenge once the present crisis is over. There will be a lot of displaced families, another a big challenge.
But I wonder whether the people will learn anything from this and the political leaders and the authorities will be willing to see the fact that the reason for this catastrophe to a great extent is man made.

On the basis of the, albeit lesser, Chennai disaster, I wouldn't have much hope.
