Hi there Indian Mikers!

I am in the process of booking 13 days in Kerala from 18th Jan to 1st Feb, have sorted our Northern part of our trip, now we have a flight from Delhi to Kochi, then 6 nights in the area, then a train booked from Kochi to Trivandrum and 6 nights down this end of the state, from where we fly out back to Australia early Feb. That is as far as I have gotten, transport in and transport out. We are two women in our forties without a strict budget but don't want to go very expensive. Ideas on where to stay? Sights to see? Our interests are Ayurveda treatments/stay, yoga and meditation, perhaps a short course (one or two day massage or ayurvedic related course) backwaters and a houseboat or at least some boat/water trips, and would love to see some temples, spiritual sites. So, what have your experiences been? Ideas for us? Best places you have been down this way? Thank you. :-)

Namaste

For your first question I think booking the first night in advance would be better.

For your second question you have some information here

Thanks aarosh. I found an old thread on the taxis but that one is more recent, thank you :-) And yes will definitely book a night somewhere the first night, coming in with no accommodation is too risky.

If you're looking for a beautiful chilled out place, you should visit Varkala. Its on the cliff with the beach below you. If you want to know more info , feel free to PM me

For budget backwater tours around Kochi have a look at those offered by the KTDC. We did the full day trip and found it very good.
Another budget option is just a local ferry such as from Alleppey to Kottayam.

Look for temple festivals with decorated elephants around Trichur, Parambikulam tiger reserve etc. This is good time to witness temple festivals.

Oh my, this is SO helpful, going right now to check out KTDC. Love the idea of the local ferry.
Varkala now on list of go to places.
Will investigate the temple festivals.
Wow thank you so much you have given me a lot here to work with, I was so lost, there seemed to be so much to do and info on Kerala I just didn't know where to start.

Ok have booked two day tours with KTDC, they do seem great value, has anyone booked accommodation with them (KTDC), are the Tamarind Budget hotels okay? As in are they clean and relatively comfy? Thank you.

Ok I have got a pretty nice itinerary sorted now, we fly from Delhi to Kochi 19th Jan and stay in a homestay around that area for 5 nights, day tripping here and there and have booked the KTDC backwater day trips (2 different ones ) Then a visit to Munnar for a night or two then we train it from Kochi to Trivandrum where we have booked a week at an Ayurvedic clinic a govt accredited one from KTDC. Thanks for your suggestions it really helped me to plan something out loosely anyway - and there is room to move too with our plans.
