Hi Folks,

I'm Delhi based, completed upto post grad and been working in a comfortable job in Delhi for the last 3 yrs. Somehow at the back of my mind there's been a lingering thought of taking up some art form, because I believe I'm emotionally expressive. Therefore post great thought and deliberation I've given my job a quit and taken a 3 months break to go to Kerala to learn Kalari , Vocal Carnatic Music and maybe get initiated into Kathakali( Which shares a lot in common with Kalari).

I've decided to goto ENS Kalari, Embram Madam, Nettoor,
Ernakulam Dist for a 3 months course there and go for Vocal and Kathakali training somewhere nearby.

My Q:

1. The fee's for 3 months at ENS is quite steep, am I making a good investment of money and time?
2. Are there good centers nearby to learn vocal carnatic and kathakali nearby, since Kochi is just 7-8 kms away?

Hoping to hear from some patron soon.

The ENS Kalari gets discussed some on this thread: http://www.indiamike.com/india/keral...ayattu-t42503/; notably in its post #39, someone has written a review of his stay there.

The rest I can't help you with, sorry. Kathakali you'd think it should be possible to study in Ernakulam or Kochi yes, but I don't know. There's the famous (but touristy) performances, in Fort Cochin, I think (but could be on the mainland), so you could enquire there. If you ask around for these, people will know it, and the performers are authentic alright, I believe.

Have a look also at http://www.keralatourism.org/trainingcentres/index.php, also mentioned on that thread (or, see if you can contact them? There's contact info on their main page.) Have you asked the ENS folks if they can give you any directions?

Best of luck with it.

Hi Ankit,
I'm visiting Kerala this December and I saw your post about possibly attending ENS Kalari. I've been studying Chinese Martial Arts for 10+ years and I am hoping to take up the 1 week course while I'm there. Did you end up going there to study kalaripayattu? If so, what was your experience like? Thanks for your attention.
