Cheap Hotel with a private pool anywhere in Kerala

So I had to do a telephone interview for a job the other day and checked in to an expensive (relatively - 2800) hotel in Trivandrum. The rooftop pool was excellent. I'm now in another place (back on a budget) but missing the swim. I think it's really what I need, to be in water.

I am going to check out Kovalam tomorrow but not holding my breath for quality of beach or peacefulness.

Therefore can anyone recommend a cheap place anywhere in Kerala that I could stay longer term (say, a week or two) to let me get my many hours daily swimming fix? I'm thinking 1000 or less/night. Thanks :)

Pref. also have a phone in the room as I might need to take some more international telephone interviews!

Hi Bobnormal,

If you manage to get to Varkala these 3 hotels (on North cliff) have private swimming pools and are all on the same road. You will need to check if they have a phone in their rooms.

The Akhil has the biggest pool. Try to book "in person" and haggle the prices down.

There are still a few restaurants and shops open on the cliff.

Staying in a cheap place 2min north of the main drag: 200INR with a private balcony with sea view. Hoping to negotiate pool access without having to stay in the above mentioned hotels ;)

Not sure what it's called. It's a blue building set slightly back from the main path, after 'Cliff ' which is just north of Italian Cafe, in the north cliff area. Will be more outside of low season.
