Folks - wanted to share a short trip report on our vacation to Calicut between Christmas and New Year's. We drove from Bangalore and stayed at the Kappad Beach Resort for 4 days.

The drive: Its long! We clocked a little over 400kms door to door although all the websites cite anywhere between 350 to 380kms. On the way out it took is approx 9 hours that included a lunch break for approx 45 mins and attending to nature calls as needed. The drive from Bangalore to Mysore to Nanjangud is a pain if you leave anytime after 8am. The traffic eased up a bit from Nanjangud through Gundlupet towards Sultan Bathery. The drive through the Bandipur forest and Wayanad towards Sultan Bathery is really enjoyable. Past Kalpetta you hit the ghats and a rapid descent that requires a little careful driving. The last 50kms into Calicut is also a pain since the roads wind quite a bit and you need to be watchful on the onside traffic. Road conditions are nice all the way through except a couple of short patches where work is being done.
Kappad Beach Resort: The good: Right across the beach, simple clean accomodation, friendly staff. The bad: food especially for vegetarians, loud parties organized for outsiders (take a room at the end of the property), parking lot next to the resort with bus loads of tourists that come to watch sunset especially in weekends.
If you walk 1/2 km away from the resort you get to very nice secluded beaches. We spent most of our time here away from the crowds. Very clean as well.

Hope this helps others who want to try Calicut.

I guess you were at Kappad at a really busy time. When we were there last year there were no outside parties and the food was excellent - they even gave us a load of recipes for things we most enjoyed. We're not veggies and that may have had a bearing. They were also happy to cook things that weren't on the menu, which may help for future visitors.
