We visited Wayanad last year but stayed in Kalpetta in the Green Mount Cottage . For 1400 rs we hired a car Calicut to Kalpetta but I am pretty sure there is a bus too.

Kalpetta itself is not much, we made a short visit to Sultan Bathery and got the idea it was somewhat better.
But the main attraction of Wayanad are the sights and the nature so it did not bother us.
We hired a car every day and had a great time, detail you can find in the February part of our journal Mainly in the South

There is no train services to Sulthan bathery. If you are coming back to Calicut best would be to hire a cab, if not there are plenty of buses both state owned transport and private buses which ply on this route. Would recommend KSRTC Volvo buses which leave around 1030 am from Calicut.
