Folks,

I am referring to this institute: http://www.aryavaidyasala.com

This place has been quoted and recommended by many in this forum. But all the info are for long term stay. (I sent AVS a mail too, no reply till now)

Q1. Does anyone know if regular (~90 min) rejuvenating massage is offered here? If yes, does it need prior appointment?

Q2. If No, which would be the next best place to walk into in Kovalam/Trivandram and have an ayurvedic massage? The names I have collected are: Thapovan and Dhanwanthari Vaidyasala.

We are touring Trivandram-Kovalam(4 days), Alleppey(1) and Kochi(2).

Thanks!
Anand

Arya Vaidyasala, Kotakkal is the one well known.

The branch list is here:http://www.aryavaidyasala.com/%28S%2...aspx?strText=S

Don't see Kovalam or Trivandrum or Allepey there. But Kochi is there.

@Rammo: Thanks, I just came to know that the shortest package that they have is for 7 days. And one needs to stay with them during that duration.

@narendra.d: Hmm, was talking about the same institute.

Thanks,
Anand

Hi Anandhsaha & future Visitors to this thread looking for

information on Kottakal Arya Vaidyasala:-

Just now back from Kottakal Arya Vaidyasala, Ernakulam after a stay of 21 days and hence thought of sharing few information which might help others.

Best way is to catch up with them is to create an user id and password in their website and provide your information through an online form which is already available in their website. In 4 to 5 days you will receive a response from the physician about the possible treatments, number of days etc (Mostly this will be from their main branch and head office, Kottakal).

As of today Kottakal is booked till May 2011 and Ernakulam till Apr 12th or so and their aluva centre too to few weeks.

I did the same and got a response stating Kottakal is Full and they suggested to check with Ernakulam , Delhi or Aluva centers.

They did provided the contact numbers and email ids etc and also a Patient reference number. I preferred Ernakulam centre (Just like that) as delhi is far off from mysore and aluva I was not sure what to expect.

Then came a response from ernakulam centre it's also booked until April 24th or so (I tried around feb 15,2011). Then after few mails back and forth and by luck I got admission starting Feb 22nd due to some cancellations.

Vital Info:-

1) Get down at Ernakulam South (as it has pre-paid auto counter - 100 Rs) but ernakulam North is bit nearer to the hospital but no pre-paid Autos and they quoted 140 Rs for a Drop.

2)In straight route hospital is just around 13 kms and during day time due to traffic jam autowallahs take a very circuitous route just to save time.

3) Hospital is around 6 years old, Fantastically maintained, super-clean , with small garden, a in-house Veg Restaurant.

4) Totally 39 rooms in Ernakulam, 220 Rooms in Kottakal and 19 rooms in Aluva

5)For 21 days, approximately they charge close to 50000 Rs (all inclusive) but it depends on what your ailment is. I was charged 31000 Rs (Excluding canteen but otherwise all-inclusive).

6)with permission, people can take a short walk upto NGO Quarters (where prepaid card, Fruits are available and it's uphill 1.5 kms walk). otherwise inpatient means inpatient . we are not expected to go out of campus ideally.

7) I saw miracles especially with those met with accidents and came bed-bound, Paralysis and several nerve related cases. I saw 1 patient (Disc Prolapse Issue) who was unable to walk when she got admitted just walked out with bright smiles in 14 days. It's truly international and I met people from ireland, russia, UK, Germany, and few from india. Nobody from the hospital staff end told all this and just on my own interest just interacted with almost all of the in-patients and got the info .

8) People who do message are pucca-professionals and the campus is maintained very well.

9) Many of the patients I met there second or third time and including me , very few are first timers.

10) In-patient treatment they have ONLY in Ernakulam, Kottakal,Aluva and New Delhi and only Out-patient services are available in quite a few places including chennai. One of the Chennai in-patient shared with me that when he tried to get inpatient admission, he was asked to First consult with chennai outpatient centre . He did the same and based on the recommendation, he got in-patient admisstion in Ernakulam.

11) Based on inputs from the patients on a casual talk the information I got was:-

A) All "Massagers" are ONLY from Kottakal( I mean they all are natives of the place kottakal) and initially they will be clubbed along with others seniors in Kottakal Facility and after 1 year they will be transferred to Aluva or Ernakulam centres and after 5 years they can opt for Delhi center. Again based on the crowd, these people are transferred across centres as except delhi all others are relatively near to each other. There are 32 male massagers and around 20 (not sure) female massagers at ernakulam center.I was told by some in mates, Kerala climate is good for Ayurveda treatment (These folks experienced Delhi before)

B) Dr. Balachandran (C.M.O) is the head in ernakulam centre with Dr.Warrier as chief physician and Dr.Renukadevi (Another senior physician) and there are 6 more Doctors available who are BAMS !

C) I was told by other experienced patients, Aluva centre is operating in an ashram and facilities wise it's not so great like ernakulam (a simple Example , No shower . Only a bucket and a Cup). Ernakulam centre has all A/C rooms with hot & Cold water for all 24 hours, shower, A TV with close to 167 channels and it has almost all the channels . Also I was told the head office / hospital at Kottakal (Due to the crowd), Canteen was not so great like ernakulam.

As always, I have lot of information on the same as except 1 hour early morning walk and evening walk and 1 hour message and 1 hour yoga , we need to pass time and hence I was just roaming around like anything within the campus and making friends with inmates !

Hope this helps
Velu

Awesome information pmvelu! This will be handy in the future. During our stay in Kochi, we did visit the Ernakulam center. We wanted to buy authentic ayurvedic hair oil. The premise was very neat and tidy.

For a massage experience, we ultimately resorted to "Somatheeram Health Resort" 6 kms south of Kovalam. A 1.5 hr rejuvenating massage with hands and foot was rated at around 21 euro (~ 1300 INR). Their facility is inviting, and very well maintained. I am not too sure about how much able their doctors are (I mean they may be very good but I am not staking any claims.), but will surely recommend if your intension is to get the experience only, so that you can tick off one TODO in your itinerary. Very safe for couples.

Thanks,
Anand

Thankyou for posting this info, very useful.

I have just received reply from Kottakkal that the earliest reservation is April 2012 (which does suit my travel itinerary) however I am also contacting ernakulam to see if i can be admitted earlier.
I have been advised a stay of 28 days inpatient for intensive treatment according to my medical questionnaire.

Any more advice would be much appreciated!
-- any reviews of Madukkakuzhy Ayurveda Health Centre???

I would like to compliment my stay 3 month stay in India (which is first and foremost for ayurvedic treatment) by a stay at an ashram, more yoga, art classes and possibly volunteer work etc. Am much in need of recommendations for non-commercial ashrams in India, location not important, however easily accessible from Kerala or Mumbai (my international airport for arrival and departure) would be best. I am due to arrive around Feb 1, 2012.

Hey......

Can you give any more details on the Ernakulam centre? Im trying to send an email to the correct address but am getting a little confused as listed on their website is;

Branch: ERNAKULAM, M.G ROAD (M.G ROAD ERNAKULAM ERANAKULAM KERALA)
Branch: ALUVA, LOURDHE CENTRE (ALUVA ERANAKULAM KERALA)
Branch: KOTTAKKAL (KOTTAKKAL MALAPPURAM KERALA)

is THRIKKAKARA (BEHIND BHARATH MATHA COLLEGE) the head office/hospital you refer to?

Hi velu,
Your post has been helpfull for my ayurveda treatment hospital search. I am considering going there (AVS), and have also been recommended in-patient admission and so you'd like to know how your stay turned out. Did you get really better? How have you managed being all day on the hospital for 3-4 weeks, apart from the treatment what else can we do? There is yoga, anything else to do? Any feedback on your experience will be appreciated.
Thanks.
