Hi,

I have 9 days to spend somewhere in India in late March/early April and am planning a trip around south India, with photography being an important (but not the most important) consideration. I'm planning to hire a car and driver, travelling independently, and am considering the following itinerary:

Itinerary 1:
Day 1: Land in Kochi in late afternoon. Overnight in Kochi.
Day 2: To Munnar in morning. Sightseeing around Munnar in afternoon. Overnight in Munnar.
Day 3: Sightseeing in Munnar all day.
Day 4: To Trichy. Evening photography around Trichy. Overnight in Trichy.
Day 5: Sightseeing around Trichy all day.
Day 6: To Madurai in morning. Sightseeing around Madurai in afternoon. Overnight in Madurai.
Day 7: Early departure for Alleppey. Afternoon/evening cruising backwaters. Overnight on houseboat.
Day 8: Return to Kochi. Remainder of day sightseeing in Kochi. Overnight in Kochi.
Day 9: Fly out from Kochi in early morning.

Would this be a viable itinerary, either in the direction given or in reverse? Am I pushing the limits a bit with regards to distance? Bear in mind that I am trying to see (and photography!) as much as possible in a short space of time, ideally a mixture of nature, culture and daily life!

If you are thinking only about photography then i dont advice munnar. Munnar is basicially is tea estates and visually it is something like a huge green carpet. I think you should end up your journey at trichy and fly back(if possible from trichy).

Hi & Welcome to IM,

Yes I do think you are pushing it, road traveling India is completely different to Australia, where Huge distances can be covered in Reasonable times.

I suggest you forget Madurai & Trichy and go from
Munnar to Thekady/Kumily area(2nghts) and then onto Allepey. The road journey from Munnar to Kumily is quite special,This will give you an extra night in Allepey where the backwaters are a
Photographers delight.

With your suggested itinery you can expect to spend a lot of time on the road.March & April it's starts getting pretty hot and humid in Coastal areas but should be cooler in the hills.

Hello Jedirocks

These are my suggestions to your itinerary:
Day 1: Land in Kochi in late afternoon. Overnight in Kochi.
Drive to Munnar from the airport: 3-4hrs
Day 2: To Munnar in morning. Sightseeing around Munnar in afternoon. Overnight in Munnar.
Day 3: Sightseeing in Munnar all day.
Excellent photo ops. in the Munnar region especially on the road going to Udumalpet via Marayoor and Chinnar. This road is flanked by high mountains, deep valleys, tea estates, shola jungles, waterfalls and prehistoric dolmens.
For pretty lakes, take the road to Top Station via Madupetty / Kundala lakes. Also the Anaiyerankal lake on the road to Periyar.

Day 4: To Trichy. Evening photography around Trichy. Overnight in Trichy.
Climb the Rock Fort for sunset / sunrise
Day 5: Sightseeing around Trichy all day.
Srirangam and the Grand Anaicut [Kallanai] offer fabulous photo ops.
Day 6: To Madurai in morning. Sightseeing around Madurai in afternoon. Overnight in Madurai.
To Madurai EARLY morning. Immediate sightseeing [you may find the Meenakshi temple a bit of a let down after Srirangam!] and leave by 2pm latest for Periyar. Overnight Periyar
Day 7: Early departure for Alleppey. Afternoon/evening cruising backwaters. Overnight on houseboat.
7am boat ride at Periyar then depart for Allepey around 10am.
Day 8: Return to Kochi. Remainder of day sightseeing in Kochi. Overnight in Kochi.
Day 9: Fly out from Kochi in early morning.

I dont agree with NKumar about the Munnar region, which is in my opinion, a photographers delight.

Do not skip Trichy / Srirangam at any cost.

From Madurai to Allepey you will have to pass Thekkady, that is why I suggested Periyar, and the boat ride affords excellent photo ops. as well, not just of wildlife. If you want to save time, skip Madurai or Periyar but it would be a long and tiresome, albeit scenic drive, from Trichy through to Periyar / Allepey.

For some of my amateur photos of these places, see the link below.
