Hello!

I'm looking for some advice on my India trip, three weeks from now.

We're arriving at Trivandrum airport at 3am and getting a train to Chennai the following afternoon at 4.30pm. We've been to Kerala a few times before, but not quite this far south. We want to relax for the day (after a long flight) before getting the train - no sight seeing, no shopping etc required. We're thinking of heading straight to Kovalam, finding somewhere cheap-ish near the beach (beach hut would be ace) so we can sleep and chill for a bit before we get the train.

Based on that, I have some questions:

Would you recommend anywhere else, apart from Kovalam?
Do you have any accommodation recommendations, bearing in mind we'll be arriving at about 4.30am and leaving at 3.30pm (we want the accommodation for the afternoon)?
How long is the journey between TRV and Kovalam by taxi - and how much?
Any other advice/tips etc????

Cheers,
OM

No shopping required --- but Trivandrum is a laid-back city, and wandering around its shops for an hour or two might be nice. For the flavour of the city, of course, not to buy anything!

No Sightseeing required --- but there is a building called The Wooden Palace in (ahhh... slipped my mind) not too far to the South of Trivandrum; I think it is well worth seeing, even if only a "timepass"

Airport/City/Beach are all within a short distance, maybe half-hour max, of each other.

No other location suggestions - I think Kovalam will suit your purposes just fine. There are no beach huts there though. The palace Nick suggests is probably Padmanabhapuram Palace, 60km south of Kovalam according to LP, but I'd say it would be too much of a rush. If you do find yourself with an hour to spare then Napier Museum in Trivandrum has some good exhibits, is an interesting building in its own right, and is cool and relaxed, and not too far from Trivandrum railway station (a short rickshaw ride). But after a long flight you'll probably just want to relax, have a coffee or two, and watch the waves and people.

TRV is less than 30mins from Kovalam. There are pre-paid taxis available at the airport. Was about Rs315 I seem to recall, a couple of years ago. That's less than a fiver. I would expect a surcharge for that dreadful time of day, but I don't remember there being one.

I'm not quite sure about your times - you mention 24 hours but I make it nearer 12...
