I was hoping to go from Hospet back to Madgaon and then down to Kerala on the 12 of Dec.

Ive checked the indian railways website and there doesnt appear to be a Train on the day (which is weird because when I checked a few days agon there was...).

So, is there a bus that goes from Hospet to Madgaon or from Gadag to Madgaon (there is a trian from Hospet to Gadag)?

On a bit of a side-bar, Ive had trouble finding information on Buses and schedules in India - is there a website or a guide out there? Where do I buy tickets from? can I just jump on?

As always thanks for any help!

There are plenty of buses from Hospet to Goa; any travel agent in Hospet will be happy to sell you a ticket. Night buses are the most popular.

go to www.ksrtc.in and register your name and create a password. Book online and print your ticket out. Click on ticket booking and you should get a fairly wide range of buses. AC buses usually ply overnight and to big cities. There is a passenger train from Hospet to Hubli which leaves in the afternoon and gets to hubli in the evening. You will need to take the overnight link express to Madgaon[check www.indianrail.gov.in and put UBL as the from station and MAO as the to station]. You will reach MAO early next morning.Service Details As per the KSRTC website there is an overnight bus that leaves Panaji at 1900hrs and gets to Hospet early next morning. Finish Hospet and head to Kerala. That way you could avoid crowded buses and trains.

I think it's a bit on the round about side if you see the map. If you are going to Kerala you could instead take a Bangalore train from Hubli or head to Mysore and book a bus to any location in Kerala.AC buses run in the evening. But the passenger train from Hospet has reservation and is meant to connect to the overnight train to either Bangalore or Mysore. If you don't want to hang around in Mysore or explore this fascinating place, you may take the first day bus to tellicherry or calicut.

Otherwise take a bus from Hospet to Bangalore and take a train to Kerala. The day train from Banglore leaves at 600AM. I am very skeptical of private operators in small towns. It is better not to face the prospect of being cheated, when one can arrange the tickets online. There may be other websites for road transport. But KSRTC seems decent enough and since it is the government's one is covered by the insurance. The reason for the train not showing must be the fact that amaravati express which ran from howrah to vasco kept a tight schedule and was often late. Short distance travelers from Hubli to Vijayawada must have complained. Moreover there are plenty of buses in the route. The railways cut the vasco trip of the train to 2 times a week.

Thanks for your help guys.

I wouldnt mind going to Mysore and then Kerela, but when I try to find a train from Hubli to Mysore and check the availability it is at "reservation suspended" - so I guess thats out of the question.

Trains from Hubli to Bangalore and Ballery to Bangalore (or Mysore) are also at availability "reservation suspended"

I tried the KSRTC website - but even after I have tried all combinations of 'Jounry Type' and 'Class of Service' the search still won't return any results.

So if I just ask around at Hospet I should be able to find a bus to Madgaon easy enough? what about a bus to Mysore?

Cheers.

Step By Step

Go to www.ksrtc.in
create a login id and password[enquiries without logging in do not tap into the software effectively.
Once you have a password and login ,click on etkt reservation
then click on advance reservation
put panaji [madgaon is for the trains] and destination hospet
choose the time slot 1800hrs-2200hrs and you will find the 1900hrs bus. I am afraid hospet is a little off the main AC bus circuit. But this should do the job. Choose karnataka sarige and you will get the bus.
Simlarly from Mysore choose the time for the bus from 1700hs-2000hrs and choose rajahamsa brand and you will get the bus to Alleppy. I do not know where you want to go in Kerala. There are lower classes available at 1600hrs like the Mysore to guruvayoor bus karnataka sarige class.
Now IRCTC
there is plenty of room available
please take a look at the train[it has sleeper which in my view be ok for the run to Hubli]

I used the same irctc website and am have got the date from that website. Others like VSP or Steven could help. But many people have managed to get tickets online. I think it is about being patient.

Thanks

Thanks York!!

I didnt realise that you had to log into www.ksrtc.in to get access to better search facilities.

The difference between you results and mine are because myu intended day of travel is the 12/12/08 not 30/10/08 - on the 12th it still looks like there arnt any trains.

The KSRTC website wont let me book anything beyond 09/11/08, at this point I guess Ill just wait and book bus tickets from Hospet on the 2/12/08 or else I'll wing it - Im sure Ill find a way .

Again thanks for your input York - very much appreciated.

Accommodation available by the Hospet Hubli train

You could book the express from Hubli to Mysore.
Please take a look this is from the irctc website. Some medium distance trains do not have 90 days reservation facility. If you waited for another 20 days you could reserve online by the 7302 from Hubli to Mysore. As far as the KSRTC goes, as with all bus travel[most people make up their mind to go by bus in India just a few days before] it has to be done 10 days before the date of intended journey. All you can do now is to ascertain the timings from www.ksrtc.in

Have a great trip good luck

My pleasure Wijay. Thanks for your kind words. It is like coutning apples and oranges and I don't think you need to worry about the Hubli-Mysore train either. It enough if you act 20 days before. It should be ok. You should be sorted with ticketing arrangemets before you leave.

You'll need to wait. You could reserve online using either clear trip or the Hospet-Hubli stretch by the train[Hospet-Hubli] if you wish at this juncture. It is not expensive and you don't lose much if you change your mind. If I were you I'd try the road relatively less travelled. It always very informative rather than being very one dimentional.
Have a good trip
