I have been reading a few threads about taxi scams. Kolkata is really bad it seems.

How about Jodhpur? Can I expect major rip off attempts? Whats the best way to deal with them? I would guess setting up front price to at least cap the overcharge

Any other views?

Thanks
Miguel

See my answer for Ahmedabad. Jodhpur is also autos and didn't seem expensive to us. Negotiate fare before setting off. You will struggle to spend more than a euro on a single trip.

I think it would be a good idea to speak to the hotel guys. They should be able to give you a rough estimate of what the cost would be.

Jaisalmer is so small that it is barely worth getting in an auto. Inside the fort a lot of the streets are so narrow you couldn't get an auto down them.

If you are worried about scams, get recommendations from your hotel. It is normal to pay about Rs 14-18 per km for a cab, and Rs 12-14 for an auto. There are many deals, 4 hrs or 40 kms, 8 hrs or 80 kms, each for a fixed price for cabs. Autos are good for single trips or short distances. It also depends on your physical condition, some roads are harder in autos than in cars, because of suspension issues.

For Jaisalmer, unless you go out of the city, it is mostly walkable within a hour maximum ( and flat roads as well). If you live inside the fort, make sure you can climb the slope from the main road into the fort, sometimes, the cops shut that road down, and do not allow any vehicle into the fort. It happens either when it is crowded on the top, or there is some VIP visiting. Of course, now is not the tourist season, so it could be no problem.

For jodhpur, or any town for that matter, understanding distances between your origin and destination is the key. If you feel you are being cheated, walk towards your destination, and find another auto. They are many in number...not so much taxis/cabs. you will have to pre-book them, unless you are in some other cities where metered cabs are available.

In my opinion I must say I felt like it was harder to get a good price on riksjaw in Jodhpur then anywhere else. I must also say that most of the rides I took were at night time, so that adds to the price. It also wasnt a very bad price but overal it was more expensive to me. Also the riksjaws look diffrent.
