Hi everyone!
Wow...I am so overwhelmed by all the details and info this forum has on India. I am at my initial stage of planning for my family vacation consisting of 3 adults and 3 kids. So far i think i have a draft itinenary for Rajasthan. Will keep that for a separate post. I am now stuck at Jodphur. I like to head off to Cochin on 20th Dec. But air fares quoted for 3 adults and 3 kidsare RS 67 800. Is that a promo rate or can I get cheaper rates. Would taking the train be an option.

Look forward to your advise.

Many thanks

Welcome to IndiaMike.

There is only one direct train from Jodhpur to Ernakilam Junction, the main station in the Kochi area, It departs on Wednesdays and takes 44 hours.

You could do the trip by changing trains in Mumbai but it would take longer.

If you book them now it is around 40.000 rs, but most flights have a long layover.

If you can change your plan and depart from Jaipur you have some better connections for the same price range.

How does Rs24000 sound?

I wish you'd set your location, or supplied more info, if you're a foreign tourist, or a Jodhpur resident (who has to work till 17:00 on the 30th, or who is free to travel anytime on the 30th and a long train journey would seem like a great way to start), it makes a lot of difference.

If you're a tourist, try to arrange your itinerary so that you end up closer to Delhi when you need to depart for Kerala, if not Delhi, maybe Agra or Jaipur, or you could look into ending at Udaipur or Mumbai. (see below regarding fog)

If I had to get from Jodhpur to Kochi, I'd seriously look into the following option.

(If you're happy to fly Jodhpur to Kochi, you'd expect to have to get up early in the morning to get to the airport, what a waste of a night)

Train 14707 departs Jodhpur daily at 14:45 and gets to Bandra (Mumbai) at 09:40, I'd book this train for the 19th, total for 3 adults and 3 little ones = Rs4770 in 3A (3-tier air con, if booked early, you'll get 6 berths in one section)

Then book Jet Airways flight 9W 403, Mumbai 13:25, Kochi 15:30, they have a special fare on the 20th of Rs3817 at the moment, don't know how long this will last, total for 6 = Rs22902 (those cheaper seats will sell out real quick, that's the first day the tourists start arriving in India/Mumbai in large numbers)

22902 + 4770 = Rs 27,672, then deduct what you would have paid for your Jodhpur hotel.

There's other train/flight combinations, but most would go via Delhi or Jaipur, and you can't take that chance in December as the fog will cause serious delays in late December around northern India.
