Hi Friends,

I am visiting Srinagar for first time and I need your help in Planning the details of Srinagar trip.
I will be visiting along with my wife and parents.

This is my travel schedule :
Fri, Oct 23: reach Srinagar in afternoon around 1.00 pm
Sat, Oct 24: Gulmarg
Sun, Oct 25: ...
Mon, Oct 26: local sightseeing
Tue, Oct 27: depart to Jammu by afternoon 12.00 noon flight

1. Please help me fill the gap on 25th. Which places are better to visit among these - Sonamarg or Pahalgam

2. How do you suggest to plan the stay. Stay and Srinagar for 4 N and do day trips to different places ?

3. I have some reservations about booking houseboats online... I would like a houseboat to be clean, spacious, quiet, offer good view of nature, and be easily accessible to road... at affordable prices.
So I was thinking to book a hotel for 1 night on Friday and in evening go to Dal lake and finalize after having a look at the houseboats and maybe do some bargaining too ?
I want to know your suggestions.

For your gap day of 25th my recommendation would be Pahalgam.

I don't like day trips. Just too much tiring travel and you don't really get to know a place without staying there overnight for at least a day. Staying in Srinagar for all full days would be the easy option as you will not have to worry about arranging accomodation in Gulmarg or Pahalgam but I think you should try to stay overnite in at least Pahalgam that I consider to be the most scenic region of Kashmir.

Swaroop, I agree with you. You will most likely pay too much if you book online and the risk that the booked houseboat in reality may not be as good as claimed in the website. There are lot of houseboats and you should certainly check out a few and bargain hard for the houseboat that you like.

Yes, you could stay one night in a hotel but Dal lake and houseboat stay and Shikara rides are the special experience of a Kashmir visit and my preference would be to spend all my Srinagar stay in a houseboat accomodation.

Also, instead of coming back to Srinagar on the 26th you could first spend two days in Srinagar and then a day each in Gulmarg and Pahalgam and then leave for the airport from Pahalgam by following the itinerary: Airport-Srinagar-Gulmarg-Pahalgam- Airport.

Thank You for your reply

Your suggestion of 2N Srinagar, 2N Pahalgam sounds good to me.

So the itinerary would look like this -
Fri, Oct 23: reach Srinagar in afternoon around 1.00 pm, stay @ Srinagar
Sat, Oct 24: local sightseeing @ srinagar
Sun, Oct 25: gondola @ Gulmarg, leave for pahalgam
Mon, Oct 26: local sightseeing @ pahalgam
Tue, Oct 27: depart to Srinagar

In either case, the houseboat question still remains...

After travelling for a good 7-8 hours from Bangalore to Srinagar, it would be good have a hassle-free booking, taking my Parents into consideration.
So I am forced to go for the online houseboat booking...

Any suggestions about trustworthy mid-range houseboats at Srinagar and accommodation at Pahalgam is much appreciated...

Swaroop, I don't know about "trustworthy" but here is some info for you to explore:

Houseboats:
Few recommended Srinagar houseboat names I have read on another forum:
New Shaheen, Young Bombay, New Golden Gem, Taj Mahal Houseboat, Ambassador HB, Chicago HB.

Also some Srinagar houseboats info on this Indiamike thread:

Pahalgam Hotels:

Good Luck with the online booking adventure

Dear Swaroop Ji,

Day 1 : As you Reach Srinagar by 1.00 pm you can check in hotel/houseboat Later Evening Around 4.00 go for few Local sight seen @ Srinagar or Shikara Rides in Dal Lake.
Day 2 : Srinagar - Pahalgam (3Hrs) check in hotel take a sight seen @ Pahalgam o/n
Day 3 : Srinagar Local Sight seen like Mugal Gardens, Pari Mahel etc...
Day 4 : Srinagar - GulMarg - Srinagar (O/N Srinagar) ( I specially Preferred to stay in Houseboat rather then Hotel)
Day 5 : Depart for Airport
