you should reach as early as possible and get yourself enrolled for 1st list (jatha), it will help you watch maximum nature and avoid rush

No, you can't avoid rush, as the time-period is less and aspirants are more. However you may try dates between 10 and 15th of July 2013.

You would be required to get yourself first registered! Please see this website for details.

thanks a lot for your advice.
there was one more thing. We are planning to reach jammu by train. then directly go to pahalagam. then take a van or bus to chandanwari and start the trek via the long route. then return via baltal.
what i want to know is that is this possible ? can you help me chalk an itinerary.
after baltal thinking of going to kashmir. stay there for a couple of days and then return.
how to reach from jammu to pahalgam and is there any bus service from pahalgam to chandanbari ?

You should report at the 3-storeyed Yatri Niwas at Bhagwati Nagar base camp at Jammu. There would be plenty of buses from there to Pahelgam and Baltal. The convoy is escorted by the CRPF. From the Pahelgam camp you would be getting vehicles to Chandanwari that too arranged by the government agencies...

If you wish to go via Chndanwari and return via Baltal then you will have to carry all the belongings with you. Please travel light but should carry heavy woolens.

So, your itinerary could be planned on the following line:

Jammu -> Yatri Niwas at Bhagwati Nagar at Jammu -> Chandanwari -> The Cave -> Baltal Base camp -> If wished may stop at Sonmarg -> else directly to Srinagar -> Jammu -> back to home :)

2. what kind of accommodation is available during the walk to Amarnath cave from chandanwari ?
3. also how many days it takes to walk from chandanwari to amarnath and what the halts in between ?
4. last year we went to kedarnath and gandhi sarovar above the valley. is this trek tougher ?

If you really want to go to Amarnathjee, you will be required to get yourself registered, else you will not be able to visit even if there is a group formed.

Generally we try avoiding moving towards Pahalgam in afternoon.

Having said that, you may try contacting at taxi stand at railway stand. You may move if anyone is ready.
2. what kind of accommodation is available during the walk to Amarnath cave from chandanwari ?
Tent accommodation and at langars under make-shift arrangements.
3. also how many days it takes to walk from chandanwari to amarnath and what the halts in between ?
Depends on your capacity. Generally it takes two to three nights.
4. last year we went to kedarnath and gandhi sarovar above the valley. is this trek tougher ?
I have not done these treks, so no idea! :(

Let's wait for someone else to reply on this!

Prakaant : after some thoughts thinking about starting from srinagar rather than jammu.
two things that come up. is it possible to return to srinagar in one day after visiting amarnath , treking down to baltal ? if not can we stay in sonmarg ,which is nearer . any ideas ?

Yes that is one option to carry all your luggage along with you. But generally such yatries make Srinagar as base camp and leave their luggage in the hotel where they stay during Srinagar stay.

The route becomes as: Srinagar to Pahelgam and then Cave and again Cave to Baltal -> Sonmarg and back to Srinagar. They return to hotel at Srinagar to complete their tour.

You may plan to have night stays at Baltal camp. That is a very big camp which would be able to accommodate you!
