Basically I am a travel freak but got introduced to Indiamike quite late as I was not aware of its existence. Few months back I found the portal through some search engine. As I was planning my Kashmir trip I needed various info about Kashmir, my planning 70% was based on the inputs which I got from IndiaMike.com .
Just few days back I returned back from my 14 day trip to Jammu & Kashmir.I had very memorable & wonderful trip to Kashmir-The Paradise on Earth, thanks to IndiaMike.com

I like to share some of my experiences which could benefit other members of the forum-
1. The Transportation is very costly in J & K like hiring Private taxis like Xylos or Tavera.

2. Avoid purchasing in Shikaras or near DalLake, best market is at Koker Market , Near Lal chowk. lLt it be Dry fruits, Paper mache or handloom products.

3. Visit Mughal Durbar at Residency road fr authentic Kashmiri food.

4. Vegetarians may visit Krishna Dhaba or Dharma Dhaba at MA rd near
Boulevard, Dal Lake.

5. Spend atleast day or two at Gulmarg or Pahalgam for maximum enjoyment
to get the full value of money & time. These places are really Heaven on
Earth.

6. If travelling by Auto, do clear & frank bargain before your board the auto.

7. Its better not indulge in any kind of sensitive or unnecessary talks with strangers because of the prevailing sensitive situation in the Valley.

8. If you are really sure you want to experience thick Blanket of snow & Extreme Winter then only venture into Kashmir during Harsh Winter (Dec, Jan & Feb) only . Come prepared mentally & physically, a comprehensiveness planning will be very helpful.

9. Walisons at Dawn Gully where we stayed is a Good Hotel with excellent Staff & Services. Its located at Boulevard, Opp: Ghat no.2, Dal Lake, Very Cosy, comfy with Good Heating arrangements & alternative Power supply arrangements during power-cuts.

10. Gulmarg Gondola: Buy the tickets online or at TRC counter near J & K Bank
Head office Opp: Tourist Taxi stand no.2. You will save time by unnecessary standing in queue at Gulmarg Gondola counter.

11. Entire Srinagar city could be toured in a single day, better hire an auto rickshaw for touring Srinagar. Bargain & negotiate before you get into an auto.

12. On your way back to Jammu from Srinagar, have at least a 1-2 days in your hand from the date of your Train or flight from Jammu as the Highway from Srinagar might get closed because of sudden Snowfall.

13. One important note is that you need not worry much about the political circumstances & disturbances as it has reduced drastically & more importantly you are a Tourist and there is no problem for the Tourist, Kashmiri's respect Tourists & Guest and take care of them quite well.

14. Also while planning your trip to Kashmir by road during Winters gather information of the current condition of Jammu- Srinagar Highway NH 1A. During Winters the Highway is opened for One-way traffic every alternative days, i.e if today traffic moves from Srinagar to Jammu, next day the Traffic will be allowed to move from Jammu to Srinagar and vice-versa. Hence in-order to avoid any inconvenience, prior planning is advisable based upon the information you gather.

Hope these informations will go long way in planning your next Kashmir Trip.

Good Night for now !

Regards & Thanks
Neelesh Naha.

Hi Nilesh!

Welcome to India Mike family. Surely, you will get lot of fellow "travel freaks" in this forum. You have started your association with IM by posting series of a comprehensive and practical tips on Kashmir travel. This will be quite helpful for future travelers. But it would have been more appropriate if you share your travel experience in the form of Trip Report (TR in short) coupled with matching photographs. Thanks.

Dear Neelesh, your post and this thread gave me some hope. I am planning to visit Kashmir this winter, between Christmas and New years. The idea is to enjoy the snowfall, let me kid play with snow. I heard some of the roads are closed like the road to Sonamarg etc.

Any inputs on this planning is highly appreciated.
