After starting which bird is this, I thought I need help with flowers. So let us see how does this one goes.

I hope it is OK to start it here, the other place I could think of was photography but with the encouraging response I got for birds, I think I will try my luck here.

So which flower is this?

It is so pretty. Never seen anything like this before.
If you post it in Flickr "what flower is that" or "What plant is that" you should get a quick response. Also try posting on indianaturewatch

What is this flower called?

In the hope of identifying some marvellous blossoms, I am starting this thread, which is a copycat of the similar "What is this bird called?" thread.

Yesterday I posted this Rajasthani flower in my Photo Gallery without knowing its name. Snonymous kindly provided the following information: "I think it is Chorisia, perhaps Chorisia speciosa or Ceiba speciosa of the Bombacaceae family - one of the Silk Cottons..."

Does anyone have anything further to add? (And please continue this thread by posting unidentified flowers here! )

Nothing further to add as Snonymous was correct, the tree has puzzled once before though - ID & small thread discussion with some interesting tidbits - here

From the same garden in South Rajasthan, at the same time of the year (last autumn), here is another one whose name I do not know, though it is reminiscent of hibiscus:

Oh, you did start the thread Theyyam, goodie! And its so nice to see larger size pictures instead of those annoying thumbnails.

The red flower tree is Cordia sebestena of the Boraginaceae family. We have quite a few of them here in Mumbai.

Thank you so much for the identification, snonymous! Thanks to the name you just provided, I have found this link:

http://www.flowersofindia.net/catalo...%20Cordia.html

which gives the common name as Geiger tree! I have never heard of this one. It is apparently a member of the forget-me-not family. Fascinating!

How do you know so much about botany?
