Hi all,
Can you take a taxi from one end of the national park to the other by driving through and across the border, without having to go all the way around? I want to go from Gudalur or Masinagudi to Bandipur by driving straight through the park. Google is showing me a 6 hour route that goes quite far East to then come back again.

I would either want to do:

Gudalur to Bandipur (Jungle Lodges accommodation just outside Bandipur park)

or

Masinagudi (Jungle Trailz accommodation inside Mudumalai park) to Bandipur (Jungle Lodges accommodation just outside Bandipur park.

There is that one road that stretches through, but can you take a taxi all the way along, entering the park at one end and exiting at the other??

Thank you!
Abi

Abi,

Yes , it's very much possible.

you could very well take a taxi from Masinagudi / Gudalur to Bandipur and this highway runs in the Periphery of the Bandipur NP forest range.

Route would be Masinagudi-Mudumalai - 10 kms drive through Via Bandipur NP and you will be at Bandipur NP Forest safari entrance / Forest dept office.

As you are specificially interested in driving through NP/ WLS, My suggestions are as follows :-

Route 1:-

Mysore-Hunsur-Nagarahole NP Entrance - Drive within the Forest for next 12-15 kms and you will be at Nagarahole NP forest dept office/ Forest safari starting point - If you skip and drive another 5 km further - Nagarahole NP other end Exit gate- 5 kms drive - you will be in front of Tholpetty WLS forest dept office/ Safari starting point - If you skip Tholpetty WLS and drive straight for few kms (Now you will be in the periphery of Wayanad WLS) you will be at a place called "Katrikulam"- Take left and you will be in the MOST Scenic and core forest of nagarahole NP and there is maximum chance of seeing wild elephants on this road and this 10-15 kms will be lonely, highly forested, very less human presence and at the minimal you can see Deer, Wild boar, elephants and this road takes you to Mysore/Bandipur/Gudalur .

Route 2:-

Masinagudi - Mudumalai NP-Bandipur NP - Gundlupet-Muthanga WLS (Wayanad, Kerala)- Sulthan bathery. IN this circuit, you will be in super-fine roads and for close to 15 -20 kms of Gundlupet-Muthanga WLS will be in Deep forests and chances of Wild elephant sighting is maximum in this circuit just on the road side of National highways.

Route 3:-

Masinagudi-Mudumalai-Bandipur-gundlupet-Muthanga WLS-Sulthan bathery-mananthavady-Take a Detour of 8 km to Thirunelli temple (This road has maximum chances of wild elephant sightings)-Tholpetty WLS-Nagarahole NP-Hunsur/Mysore --> This is a complete wildlife circuit and you will be in Very dense forests for most part of the journey and wildlife sighting chances are more and this covers all almost in that region.

General :-

All of the WLS/NPs in that region (Read Nagarahole NP,Muthanga WLS,Tholpetty WLs,Mudumalai NP, Bandipur NP) has the same format. There is a forest range named after the NP/WLS and there will be a dedicated entrance at each of the places where a Forest dept office is located and wild life safari (private/public) starts from there and go into deep forests . So just we can traverse Via/Through all of the wls/NPs in the properly laid State highways/ National highways in the "PERIPHERY" and if at all if we want to do a safari onto the deep woods, We need to avail the safari .

Hope this is of some help.
Please post if you need more info

Hi Velu,
Thanks for your comprehensive reply! My main concern was that if it was a taxi, it wouldn't be allowed to just drive along the Mysore-Ooty road without prior permission, since it crosses a border, and you end up exiting the park from a different entrance to where you entered.

I'm not specifically looking for a good drive, just want to know it's possible to get from Masinagudi to Bandipur Jungle lodges via that road. I want to book Jungle Trailz for one day and volunteer at the Hill View Farm animal sanctuary, and then get taxi via Mysore-Ooty road to Bandipur Jungle Lodges for one night where I will do the Jeep safari package.

If it's not too much trouble, can you look at my plan and locations above and say if it makes sense / is good?

I'd rather not run into wild elephants with a taxi driver, that's what the safari is for!

Thanks,
Abi

It's perfectly doable Abi. No issues.

You can very well drive in a taxi from Masinagudi to Bandipur JLR.

This Stretch is closed for vehicular traffic between 9 pm - 6 am.

Regards
Velu
