LATEST UPDATE 20/09/2016

The website for booking safaris has changed and several other changes too seem to have been brought into the Online safari booking system.

The new website is : http://fmdss.forest.rajasthan.gov.in/

I've absolutely no idea how it works but registered vendors (read Hoteliers/Travel agents) seem to be having a field day.

Here's the link to the new procedures for booking your safaris : http://fmdss.forest.rajasthan.gov.in...et_Booking.pdf

My family and I are planning a 2 to 3 day trip to Ranthambhore next March or April. I had a number of questions related to the upcoming trip. I am hoping that someone who has visited the park recently or is a seasoned visit to Ranthambhore will be kind enough to answer my questions.
1. Number of safaris: I know there are no guarantees when it comes to wildlife spotting. However, as we know, the probability increases with the number of safaris one makes into the park. What is the recommended minimum number of safaris that I should plan for -- two, three or more?

2. Cost: Are the costs for the safaris fixed by Rajasthan tourism or is this set by the tour operators. I tried to look up the cost information on the Rajasthan (online) booking site but drew a blank. Is there a link to some kind of a table that clearly lists out the costs for the various different options -- for the standard jeep safari/pp (with zones being allotted by the park administration), cost of a half-day and full-day zone free safaris/pp and then the cost of the jeep (if we were to hire the entire jeep). Do these costs include all taxes or is that separate?

3. Booking: I tried to check out the online booking site. Wasn't very successful. I also read on your blog that the tour operators tend to grab most of the spots in the zones that are in high demand. Given that, does it make sense to go with a tour operator rather than try to arrange the trip on my own? I am sure there are many tour agencies out there. Any recommendations for tour operators that have an excellent reputation, great customer satisfaction ratings, offer fair and transparent pricing and do not try to fleece the customer? Also, how many days in advance does one have to make the booking?

4. Guides: Are the guides assigned by the park authorities or are there a list of private guides that the tour operators hire? If I were to go for a half-day, zone-free safari with a dedicated jeep, would I have to hire my own guide? Any recommendations? As you know, a good guide can make a huge difference in what one gets to see and the overall safari experience. What is the cost of a guide for a half-day safari?

5. Pick up/drop off: Do the safari jeeps pick up the visitors from the hotel or does one have to be dropped off/picked up from the park entrance? Do the hotels where one is staying provide the pick up/drop off?

6. Timing. What are the timings for the morning and evening safaris in the March / April timeframe. Is it the same for zone free safaris?

7. Any recommendations for hotel / resorts that are in the three and 4 star category?

8. I have heard that the park also has lots of birds. Are the guides typically knowledgeable about the birds that one sees and usually point them out if one expresses interest in birding?

9. Are there other places to visit (besides the tiger safari) during one's visit to Ranthambhore / Sawai Madhopur?
