In the last week of December 2014, me & my family visited Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Morigaon, Assam. Initially, our plan was to visit Kaziranga National Park from Guwahati. Later, I dropped the plan for Kaziranga NP due to the shortage of time as well as the distance from Guwahati. The distance of the Kaziranga NP from Guwahati is almost 175 km whereas Pobitora WLS is only 50 km. Our purpose was to see world famous one-horned rhinoceros and that can fulfilled in Pobitora WLS. So, we cancelled our hotel bookings in Kaziranga & headed for Pobitora WLS.

On 27/12/2014, we arrived in Guwahati and checked into our guest house which was located at Narangi Road area. Evening, we were roaming here and there in the local market. We took our dinner in the guest house and went to bed.

Next day i.e. on 28/12/2014, we got up early in the morning, took bath, hired an auto & proceed towards Kamakhya Temple. We were in the queue for free darshan. It took almost 4 hours for darshan & we came out of the temple. We had some light snacks & returned to guest house. After sometime, we took lunch & proceed towards Pobitora WLS. Within two hours, we reached there. By that time, the sun was set. We checked into Maibong Eco Resort which was inside the area of Pobitora WLS. The main gate of the Pobitora WLS is only 5 minutes walking distance from our hotel. Our room was neat & clean. It was made all of wood. Pobitora is a very small place and the no. of hotels near Wildlife Sanctuary is very limited. We took our dinner in the dining hall. Food was tasty but price was a little bit on the higher side. After sometime, we went to bed. In the night, suddenly, my wife was shouting “Hey!!! Get up!! Earthquake!!! Come out quickly”. By the time, I got up, earthquake gone. I use to sleep very deep & my wife has a very strong sense. She heard the vibration sound of bed, sofa etc. Immediately, she woke up & started to shout. We came out of the room & saw my sister, her husband and son as well as other tourists is also coming out of their rooms. My wife & daughter were much tensed. We waited at outside for 10-15 minutes & again entered into the room. After sometime, we fall asleep.

Next morning i.e. on 29/12/2014, my wife told that she could not able to sleep properly due to the fear of earthquake. Anyway, we started for elephant safari inside the Pobitora WLS which we booked last night. Our hotel owner Mr. Nipen Nath did all these arrangements. The mahout took us to a grassland area where we saw many one-horned rhino. Some of them, we saw from a nearby distance. As we all know, rhino is extremely short tempered animal & with cub, it is one of the fearsome animal. She will do anything to protect her cub. I told to all my family members hold it tightly so that you should not fall from elephant back accidentally; though, one gunmen was accompanying us in other elephant during the safari. Apart from rhino, we saw other animals like buffalos, foxes etc. Safari was lasted for 2 hour. It was a breathtaking experience.

We all, especially, my daughter enjoyed it very much. It can easily be called as mini Kaziranga. People like me who are shortage of time & still want to see rhino in open area then this is the best option. Many people visit Pobitora WLS from Guwahati & return back on the same day. After the safari, we came back to the hotel and had our breakfast.
After lunch, we hired one jeep & visited Mayong village which is famous for black magic. After that, we to a sunset point. The sunset point was a little bit height on the banks of river Brahmaputra. It was beautiful point & enjoyed it. We saw fishermen were fishing in the river, some birds most probably Ruddy Shelduck were searching food in the shallow river water. After the sunset, we return back to our hotel.

Next day on 30/12/2014, we returned back to Kolkata via. Guwahati. Watching Rhinos from the back of elephant was a memorable experience. Enjoyed the trip very much.

Excellent post and fantastic pictures!

(Why have you posed the question "Pobitora Wild Life Sanctuary – An alternate to Kaziranga National Park ?"? Is that meant as a literary device and a figurative sleight, aka a cunning rhetorical question?)

Thanks for your liking. Actually, my plan was to visit Kaziranga NP but due to some urgent personal work, I have to return back my home. So, no Kaziranga; no problem, Pobitora is there; there also we can enjoy. I opted Pobitora as an alternate to Kaziranga. Though, Pobitora can not match Kaziranga in terms of area, types of animals, birds & other species it contain still it can be an alternate. Other, IM members also share their ideas/comments regarding this.
