Kataniaghat: virgin tiger reserve

As I can see there has been no response to the post, it seems this destination is not at all popular with IMers!!! I went to that place for a 3 day trip. This is a virgin tiger reserve unspolilt by tourist. Wildlife is seen in plenty. Worth a visit if u want to visit the rawness of a forest area. I was surprised to see such a place within 200 km of Lucknow.

This place is in the baharaich district of UP. U have both road and rail link right upto the tiger reserve, personal vehicle is ofcourse is a better option. Things are basic there, as this place is still virgin and not at all commercialized. Accommodation is exclusively in the Guesthouses of forest department (there are 4 guesthouses in this area) with no electricity, running water in bathroom. There is no private accommodation in the sanctuary or in the buffer zone. However more modernized accommodation is available at Bharaich town, which is 60 Km from kataniaghat. The connecting road runs though forests at places and worth a drive.

i belong from Bahraich, katerniaghat is really virgin and less exploited than Dudhwa
Accomodations are available at Katerniaghat ,Motipur and kakraha resthouse and can be booked online at upecotourism.in and tariff includes fooding and entry fees
It is accessible from Lucknow by road and its about 210 kms frm Lucknow .Bus service is pretty infrequent and direct service is not available
i recommend you to book a cab from lucknow for round trip .i recently used cab myself ,you can contact the driver at 9795500786
i will feel pleasure to be your host and you can PM me anytime for any help
In katerniaghat you can have sight of river dolphins

Route to Katernia ghat is Lucknow-Barabnki-Bahraich-Nanpara -Katerniaghat.katerniaghat FRH is best among other rest house
You may include a trip to Nepal as it is only 15 kms enroute to Nepal border(NEPALGANJ)
Nepalganj is gateway to some very beautiful treks and it serves as a starting point to
Dolpo trek,Humla regin,Shey Phoksundo lake trek famous for its torquiose blue colour
Dolpo region is similar to barren Tibetan plateu and is still less frequented by tourists since it is quite far from Capital Kathmandu
Dolpo trek is many way better than Annapurna or EBC as it is less crowded .Trek to Lower Dolpo is a tea house trek so no porters required

I've been told that an OLD FRH (British days) is best. Can you tell me which one it is and how to book it...also which are the routes to opt for, for safaris? Most chances of tiger and rhino.
Thanks

You can book accomodations at www.upecotourism.in and opt for Rest houses at Katerniaghat only.

Great chances of viewing big cats in core area around Katernia and Murtiha range

Thanks Rashid, I've read that Kishanpur is better for tiger sightings? And between Kishanpur & Katerniaghat which one would you suggest to go to and stay in the FRH. I'm planning to stay 2 nights in Dudhwa (1 night in in private resort & 1 night in sathiyana FRH) and 1 night either in Katerniaghat or Kishanpur...thanks

Katernia is even better than Dudhwa as it came on tourist map very recently,so virgin and devoid of tourists

In Katernia, apart from fauna in the woods, you will have sightings of River dolphins and Crocodiles in their natural habitat on the bank of Geruwa river. Crocodiles sighting is sure as Geruwa is having crocodiles in large numbers

Summers are the best season to view big cats when they rush to water sources

The sanctuary is about 210 kms from Lucknow or 90 kms from Bahraich and Lakhimpur . Bicchia railway station is located inside the sanctuary on Gonda-Mailani Metre gauge rail route
