Just came back from a Corbett Bijrani Zone. Stayed there for 2 nights and did 5 safari total. Sighted a tiger ( or just a glimpse and no picture). Lucky to get booking on current in the single room. Saw lots of birds though including many hornbill. Some pictures are here.

Halduparao FRH and Sonanadi Zone

I visited Halduparao FRH in Sonanadi Zone. The FRH is built in 1892 and close to the dam of Dhikala. The forest is beautiful and the setting of the FRH is on the high banks of the river Sonanadi.

We saw black bear and other animals. Ofcourse we did not see a tiger on the 3 days we spent. Loved the FRH and the bird life in the zone.

A small blog writeup with pictures are here. We think this FRH is a great place for a wildlife weekend or even more from Delhi.

Access is via Kotdwara and easy nice road.

Suggestions please:

I have gone through the most of the trip reports and have a general idea about CTR. I am planning to visit CTR for 5 days (excluding days of journey ). My question to the indiamikers who have visited CTR so many times is, should I stay only at one place (my preference is Dhikala zone) or should I try other FRH also.
I have heard it is difficult to get online booking of the FRH. I have to go through agents. Is it so? Veterans of CTR please help. Another query, where to book the gypsy safari/car? Is it online also (though it seems to be)?
The location of which FRH is the most beautiful ? I will have 6 morning safaris and 3 evening safaris. Rest 3 evenings are kept for soaking the environment only

with best wishes

Hi Krishnapriya,

This response is not just to disappoint you!

On 25/05/2018 I have made a visit to CTR through Dhela on evening safari slot. Having flown so far, personally I felt very bad for not getting sight of any animals barring few deers & monkeys! Though nobody can guarantee animal sight on our visit time, its a bit disappointed one! Rather to my surprise persons who came behind our jeep (5-10 mins gap) they also didn't see anything!

I am given to understand from a guide that only Dhikla & Bijarani are the main core area where we can have a decent sight!

As we had stayed in TRH, Ramnagar finding safari jeeps were not that much of problem being that hotel staff are co-operative. In my opinion jeep owners/drivers are bit rude while try to encash our visiting eagerness. I had shell out Rs.3,100 for 2-3 hours trip.

Initially even I tried & failed miserably to get FRH booked at Dhikla! 45 days in advance booking is allowed & by the time when (on dot) we try 'technical failure' pop-ups! God knows how Agents get those booked! Itz all mystery!

Anyway try yourself & update your visit report upon completion of CTR visit.
Best of luck for your CTR visit!

Thanks,
Jay

Thank you for sharing your experience. Is it the only private gypsy carrying out the safari? won't there any vehicle of forest department?

My friends also have the similar experience regarding the booking of FRH through online.

@Krishnapriya,

Yeah there are only private gypsys available for Safari. Those vehicles might have got permitted by Forest Department to take across I guess!

Thanks,
Jay

Yes, there is one. Not a gypsy though ; Forest department offers canter ride to Dhikala ( one trip daily in the morning). That's the only way to visit Dhikala zone , if one doesn't have the night stay permit in FRHs of Dhikala.

thanks to both of you Arupratan Ghosh and Jayanna B.
So it is the accepted fact that for booking I have to depend on agents. And for hiring gypsy I have to negotiate local car owners.
A last request: any reliable car owner / driver? or is it a standard rate of the car union/association?

with best wishes,
Krishnapriya
