Anyone been to Betla National Park in Jharkhand? I'm considering going for a few days but it's hard to find first person accounts about the place. There's a train from Gaya(I'll be in Bodh Gaya in March) to the nearest rail station at Daltonganj-3 or 4 hours)but it leaves about midnight and gets there in the middle of the night.Travel in that area seems difficult.Would I be crazy to take a daytime bus there?

Train 3348 PALAMAU EXP leaves Gaya post midnight at 00:15 and reaches Daltonganj at 05:37 in just over 5 hrs, 22 min. to cover the 217km distance.

Betla is connected to Daltonganj (25 kms) via Khudia morh (6km).

Came back from Betla in Jan. I would not recommend going there in this season. You will barely see anything (The park is overgrown with shrubs...they dry off only in summer). And the hotel there is really bad. And I would not travel there at night.
See my post at http://soumya.org. It will be a lot of effort for very little return.

I searched with 'Betla' and got to this thread. My primary intension is to provide some phone numbers for those who are interested in visiting the place.

I had been to Betla (30 Sep 2012 - 2 Oct 2012) and it was a nice experience. We stayed at Hotel Van Vihar (06567226513). The staff were very helpful. We were the only guests. Staff arranged 'Mahua' (though diluted) for us. I specifically mentioned 'Mahua' because some people will search with this keyword and eventually come to this thread. In Betla they have frequent power cuts. Though they have generator but its obvious that AC doesn't work during a power cut. Van Vihar has a nice terrace and we spent a wonderful time there on the full moon night.

To summarize, we reached there on a Sunday, next morning rode the elephant. There were two elephants. Juhi is the bigger one. The smaller one (I forgot the name) is very naughty and gave us a hard time. Then took Md Aslam's car for three point tour (Kechki river confluence, Fort and Jeep Safari in Betla National Park). That was all to see in Betla, apart from the animals.

You can call Md Aslam (09955527371) and he will help you plan your trip.

I can tell you how we planned our trip. It was a 4 day trip. We started on Friday night and returned on Wednesday early morning. We took Ranchi Hatia express on Friday night and reached Ranchi Saturay morning. Checked into a hotel. Hotel arranged a car and we visited Dasam falls, Jonha Falls and Hundru falls. At Jonha we ordered lunch before climbing down the stairs and by the time we returned lunch was ready. They cook only what we order. Next morning (Sunday) we took another car to go to Betla and reached Betla by 3 O'clock. Monday morning we took elephant ride and then took the three point tour in Md Aslams car. Tuesday afternoon we reached Daltonganj in Md Aslams car to catch Shaktipunj Exp. and reached Kolkata early morning Wednesday (you can also catch the train from Barwadih station which is nearer to Betla). Though Barwadih (12 km) is nearer to Betla but Daltonganj (25 km) is a bigger station. In case you want to go to Betla directly, skipping Ranchi, Daltonganj would be a better choice.

In Betla you can stay either in Van Vihar or in Forest Rest House. Van Vihar being just outside the forest gate remains open throughout the year, whereas Forest Guest House opens on 1st October every year. Apart from standard rooms forest rest house do also have two cabins on the tree house. Tree house is the most adventurous and most economical of all the options. Talk to Md Aslam and he can help in booking your accomodation. You don't need more than 2 nights in Betla.

I would suggest you to have a similar plan. Only improvement could have been to take a train from Ranchi to Daltonganj instead of a car (considering both cost and comfort) but unfortunately the train timings were not suitable for us. Another point to consider, it is not advisable to travel at night in those areas. Some roads are officially closed after 8 PM. Though you need not worry about this at all, but just keep this in mind.

If you have any specific questions, do ask.

hi debdasd,
we guys want to combine Hazaribag with Betla during our 15-18th Dec trip.
our tentative itinerary:-
day-1: Catch HWH DHN D D EX at 8:30 am, will reach Dhanbad arround 1pm, hire a car for Hazaribag, Overnight at Hazaribag Forest rest house.Night safari inside the forest.
Day-2: Morning Zeep safari inside the park & local sightseen. After lunch proceed towards Betla by car.Overnight at Betla tree house.
Day-3: Full day Zeep safari inside Betla forest. night safari at Betla.Overnight there.
Day-4: Morning elephant ride inside Betla forest. catch Shaktipunj Exp at 1:30pm.
now I want to know:
a) how can I book Betla tree house in advance...?
b)who will organise night safari & elephant ride inside Betla forest...?
c) I think Md Aslams can arrange zeep safari & local sightseen inside Betla forest...?

Hi tarakm,

I have not been to Hazaribag and don't know about Hazaribag forest and whether night safari is possible or not. I believe night safari is not possible. On day 1, by the time you reach Hazaribag it will be dark. On day two, if you have to reach Betla, you need to start very early, probably just after breakfast. Hazaribag is 200 km from Betla and I think it will take around 6 to 7 hours. In our case, the car had to return to Ranchi the same day, otherwise the car owner would have charged us for for one extra day. On day three, there's no need for full day zeep safari in Betla, two hours are enough besides there are other points to see and I am sure you you will like the Kechki river confluence point. There is nothing called night safari in Betla. I would suggest you try to keep the elephant ride on day three, and in case it doesn't work out you will have a reserve day. And in case you like it you can take that again next day
If you start on 15th morning, I think including Hazaribag would be little hectic. Netarhat would have been a better choice than Hazaribag. And Hazaribag could be done some other time.

Now to answer your questions,
a) To book tree house call Aslam and he should be able to book it. Alternatively, it can be booked from Jharkhand tourism office in Kolkata.
b) There is no night safari, and none is allowed to enter forest after dark. Elephant safari can be booked on the spot. Talk to Aslam about it.
c) Yes, Aslam will arrange the safari and everything else possible. Just call him. He knows much more than I do..

Yes It is possible. In fact the road is scenic. You will also see the Lodh Falls en-route. If you check internet you will get frightened, but the car drivers say it's perfectly alright to travel on this route.

Though there is nothing to worry, you can stay at station till dawn. But it is not advisable.
You can go other way round, that is, from Netarhat to Betla. The best way to go to Netarhat is via Ranchi.

I can think of two options. Option 1 is for Netarhat and Betla.
Option 1) Take Ranchi Hatia express on 14th night, reach Ranchi on 15th morning. Start immediately for Netarhat. Reach Netarhat by 15th late afternoon.
1a): 16th whole day Netarhat and 17th morning start for Betla. Reach Betla by noon. OR,
1b): Start for Betla 16th afternoon, 16th night at Betla.
17th afternoon take zeep safari in Betla forest. 18th morning elephant ride. 18th afternoon catch Shaktipunj express. Reach Kolkata 19th early morning.

Option 2) Take Ranchi Hatia express on 14th night, reach Ranchi on 15th morning. There are so many things to see in Ranchi, you can tour Ranchi. 16th start for Betla. 16th and 17th night at Betla.

This is a guideline only. Follow your instincts. You have three nights and after reaching Netarhat decide whether to spend one night there or two. You could have done better planning had you called up Md Aslam. He is a local person and perhaps he could have provided you with more options. By the way, check with Aslam on if he could book the Netarhat tree house as well.

In my opinion, I would have chosen option 1 with 1a).
