Dear friends,
I'm currently based in Bangalore and am planning a trip around Bangalore in end-Dec with my family, who are visiting me from Delhi. Coming from North of India, it would be nice if we could experience a more region specific holiday.
Some details: We're 6 member in total (my mother, brother+wife+2kids -10 & 12 yrs age – and me). We plan to book a car for the trip.
The rough itinerary plan as of now is as follows:
23rd evening: Family arrives Bangalore
24th whole day: Local sight-seeing etc
25th: Not decided. Need help!!!
26th: Not decided. Need help!!!
27th morning: Drive down to Ooty - stay there 2 days (this part of the plan is inflexible - since we already did the hotel bookings). One day we could go for the local common sight-seeing places. Is coonoor worth a trip on second day or shall we roam about in Ooty only?
27th morning: Drive to Mysore after breakfast. Local sightseeing – palace, zoo, garden and temple - stay overnight and come back to Bangalore by 30th evening. Here, it would help, if you could guide on accommodation options in Mysore. Our budget would be around Rs 3000 per night. I was considering Hotel Pai Vista. Is that recommended? – we read mixed reviews. Are there other good options in the price range?
Now, our major confusion is on planning the 25th & 26th itinerary. We were considering one of the following:
1. Bandipur/ Nagarhole (not sure which one is better!!! – how is Tusker Trails as an accommodation option there?). There are many informative posts on this topic, mostly by pmvelu – but still not able to decide
2. Coorg (but am afraid that Ooty and Coorg might be similar holiday experiences...is it?)
3. Mangalore - primarily for a beach experience for the kids - but we have not found any good beach resorts close to the city (guessing that there is not much point in driving all the way unless we stay at the beach) and therefore am considering dropping the Mangalore idea...unless someone knows of good beach resorts closeby??
4. Or, are there any other beach places around that could suit our plan?
It would be great if you all could advise and/or share your experiences for these places. Thank you all in advance.

I did coorg, mysore, nagerhole. If going to OOoy I wouldn't spend too much time in coorg, but make sure you at least take some time to enjoy the scenery there.

Mysore is wonderful and laid back. Check out the museums, the palace; the art in the palace is fabulous. Food is out of the world, especially vegetarian. I stayed two nights at Laitha Mahal Palace. Found it it overated but nice to have said I stayed in a palace. Others can provide other leads for places.

I did not do bandipur this year, which I did in 2007. Did nagerhole and wayanad (Kerala) this time. I found nagerhole the best amongst the three but then it all depends. Wild life is all about luck and weather. Stayed at Jungle Inn, who also hosted safaris, though there is also government run safaris in larger buses.

I also went to the Ranghanthitu Bird Santuary on way to Mysore. Found the trip in the lake way too brief. Saw some incredible birds and crocs but wished I had more time. Also stopped at Tippu's palace on the way.

I wanted a relaxing nature filled trip and was satisfied when there were no rains, we had heavy rains and so slowed us up and had to change plans. You should be OK the time you go.

Good luck. Velu I am sure will respond; he is the expert for travel in this region.

Hi
While taking start from ooty Bandipur is on the way hope you know.
and the option of manglore is impractical since the drive is too long and it will take your entire two days for that.
Nagarhole and wayanad are the good options I feel.
It is only mater of 2hrs drive from Ooty to Wayanad and while driving you are covering the bandipur area also
You can stay at Wayanad and explore the sights one day and next day you can make a safari to Nagarhole national park and drive back to banglore through the beautiful National park road

the budget of 3000 for six feels too low when comparing the X mas season for ..
you can try at Mint flower hotel or Issacs regency at Sulthan bathery.
If you can spent little more (since you saves on travel) you can look for some home stays too (Ente veedu, Hillya resorts,Green leaves habitat are good options)
Tusker trail is a good option if you staying at Bandipur
You can try the Masina gudi area also for your stay
I dont want to make you more confused..
please think about wayanad..
Hope Mr Velu will come with more clear plans

It's got to be a beach close to Bangalore now (&Ooty too!)

Hi Danield & Narayan moorthi. Thanks for the prompt replies.

Actually, the kids have now ruled out all choices for us – and we have to go to a beach place for sure as they have told us
so, I think that rules out the national park/ wayanad / coorg (btw, really liked the wayanad suggestion – was looking up on the place and it seems promising- so may be next time)

So now, am looking for a good beach resort for a holiday. Mangalore seems to be the closest to Bangalore and the best bet. But the closest resort – Summer Sands does not seem to have any good reviews…are there any other options for a beach stay for 2 days then?...

@ Danield: thanks for the tips on mysore travel. Lalitha palace is out of the budget for us…so have to find some other options.
@ Narayan moorthi: the kids are now insistent on a beach and dont want to disappoint them…so I think we have to do more driving around now . the budget for Mangalore as well as Mysore is abt Rs 3000 perday per room (we’d need 2 rooms) …

So, it would be great if you all could now suggest some beach getaways from Bangalore (leave on 25th morning & stay till 27th morning) considering that we’re going to Ooty on 27th morning!
Sorry for misdirecting the post to another direction earlier! Thanks for the suggestions

If you want to visit beach close by try Mahe or Muzhappilangad. Google it for details.

The nearest beaches to Bangalore are in the east coast of india - chennai, mahabalipuram, pondy...

You could do them and get to coimbatore and onward to ooty. and your return leg of the trip still stands protected.

None of the beaches in the western region can be reached as fast nor would any of them be nearer to get to ooty.

Hi Jusmail: Thanks for the reply - i looked up Mahe & Muzhappilangad - both seem suitably located distance-wise for our trip...but haven't found a good beach resort to stay on either of the beaches...Are you aware of any good beach resorts for a budget of ~3000 (perday perroom)?

Hi Ribhu95: Thanks for the reply...east coast beaches are closer to bangalore than west coast...but when driving back to ooty, it'll be a longer stretch so we're gonna have to restrict to west coast beaches only now...

so, am still stuck on mangalore - or may be mahe/muzhappilangad if some good resort is available ...i tried for Sai Vishram resort around Bhatkal, but its booked already! So, any more suggestions?
Thanks

Hi,

For mysore, you can try Royal Orchid (came recommended from another person in a different forum). I am sure you can find good accomodation in Mahe. So you can try your luck there. Muzhappilangad has only basic accomodation in the beach front and is a little remote. For better accomodation you can go to Kannanur also called Kanoor which is approximately 10 km away.

Start by 5 am from Bangalore , Drive to Bandipur NP and try out safari and proceed to ooty Via Mudumalai NP and Kalghatty Ghats. If you are highly inclined to Wildlife you may stay at Masinagudi / Bokkapuram [Which are 5 kms from Mudumalai NP] and there are so many resorts in this area. May be you could do a safari again onto Mudumalai NP and also observe the Elephant conditioning camp in Theppakadu and then drive to ooty.

Coonoor is worth a try.

Pai vista is good [Especially their restaurants] but it's just opposite to Suburb bus stand .You may try out MAyura Hoysala [KSTDC lodge] which is calm quiet and the ambience will be good and just 100 metres from Mysore JN and it will be 1200 Rs/ Night for couple.
earth.

General :-

1) Skip Nagarahole NP for this trip as it's out-of-the-way in your current itenary
2) Skip Bangalore and you may add that day to Mysore and explore Shrirangapatna / Ranganathittu BS / Talakkadu / Shivsamudra waterfalls for that day
3)Skip Mangalore or Coorg as again it will be too circuitous & too crunched .
4) If at all if you are ok to skip ooty, they you may plan for something like :-

Bangalore- Mysore(2 Days)-Kasaragod [2 days] [ Bekal Fort, Temple,Pallikere beach]-Madikeri [ Coorg] [ 2 Days] [ 1 Day for Coorg tourist spots along with Talacauvery [Highly scenic and highly auspicious] followed by second day for visiting enroute places like "Tibetan Golden temple" , "Dubare Elephant camp".

The abovesaid plan will address all your needs and anyways Mysore and Coorg itself will be very very pleasant during your trip.

Hope this helps. If you need more info, Please post.

Regards
Velu
Hi, I had actually posted my initial query on both - ‘tamilnadu’ & ‘indian wildlife & NPs’ - forums (sorry about spamming both threads!...wasn;t sure which was the appropriate one).
@pmvelu: sir, am now posting my reply to both forums, but it would be helpful if you could reply on ‘wildlife & NPs’ forum’s thread now, since all others have replied here.

@pmvelu: Hi sir, thank you for your response. There is a slight change in the itinerary as per the children’s demands (had posted that as replies on the other thread…)
Now, the children are curious on a beach holiday since that would be a new experience for them – so, as you said it might be too circuitous & crunched; but we’re still going ahead with this …(Ooty can’t be skipped – coz we did the bookings a while back & its not refundable ). So, I think that rules out the NPs / coorg for us. Our revised itinerary would be roughly as follows:

25th morning – 27th: Leave to some beach destination & stay there till 27th morning – having a hard time deciding upon this. It would have to be on the west coast & the suggestions so far are:

Mangalore – we are exploring beach resorts close to the city. Looked up Summer Sands resort – but that has mixed reviews & some of them do not seem to be favourable to a family outing. Is it? Are there some other good places closeby to stay there? Also, since we’re reaching there on x-mas day, most places may even be booked (had enquired about Sai Vishram – which is all booked).

Kasargod – this seems like a good option…was exploring this online. Infact called up the Bekal beach Camp for accommodation queries & its house-full there already Does anyone know of any other good options of a beach stay in kasargod/ bekal area? (-budget abt Rs 3000 perday per room)

Mahe– have not been able to find any good accommodation options there yet. Muzhappilangad, as told by Jusmail has no good staying options, so am ruling that out.

Of all, I think we’ve to either take a place at Mangalore or Bekal area. Would be great to hear suggestions on staying options for both (preferably at/very close to the beach)

27th morning: leave for Ooty... staying there till 29th morning

29th morning: leave for mysore & stay there one night & leave for Bangalore on 30th evening.
@ jusmail: Royal Orchid looks great, but is way out of our budget
@pmvelu: Mayura Hoysala seems good & reasonable…am going to call and enquire from both Pai & Hoysala & decide then…Hoysala is as good as Pai in terms of the rooms/cleaniness etc?-kstdc site doesn’t have any hotel room pics.
Also, now we’re certainly going to do both - the Shrirangapatna & Shivsamudra – thanks for the ideas, it would have been really bad to have missed out these two - both look great!

Thank you all once again…it’s been a great help so far

Thanks & regards,
earth.

Tusker trails experience will be very good and it is owned by the royal families of mysore.
If one goes thru all the post of pm velu I dought their will be any questions to be answered except some general clarification like this.

To me nagarahole is better, less crowed, sighting of animals is better.
2.Coorg (but am afraid that Ooty and Coorg might be similar holiday experiences...is it?)
Coorg and ooty are different. Ooty is more or less a family oriented holiday destination, honey moon couples, always crowded But coorg is more of coffee estates, forests and good home stay places in the coffee estates.
Ooty is a something like mt abu, nainital, simla of the south and coorg is culturally very different. It is very unique in indian culture.

3.Mangalore - primarily for a beach experience for the kids - but we have not found any good beach resorts close to the city (guessing that there is not much point in driving all the way unless we stay at the beach) and therefore am considering dropping the Mangalore idea...unless someone knows of good beach resorts closeby??
You have beach resorts close by to mangalore but it way out of your route.
4.Or, are there any other beach places around that could suit our plan?
The costal belt from mangalore to goa has got quite good interesting places including beach resorts/temples like murudeshwar.
@nkumar: Hi sir – thanks!...as you’d read on my message posted above – there is now a change in the itinerary – so, more revised planning is needed. Would appreciate if you could suggest a good stay on the west cost (preferably mangalore or south of it towards ooty – since ooty can’t be cancelled now)

ps: your analysis of ooty vs coorg was very well put

Hi ,

My Bad. I did not see this thread and posted in your other thread,

My comments below.

I would suggest from my travel experiences to all these places, Kasaragod is better Or Kannur [ Mangalore will be crowded and Beach wise it doesn't have better beach in the city and you need to go all the way to Malpe [ 5 kms from Udupi & 60 kms from Mangalore] and Ullal / panambur beaches are ok But as you have 3 days planned for beach holidays, I would suggest the following:-

You can base yourself at kasaragod and you have the following to explore for those 3 days:-

1. Bekal fort & Bekal beach resort[ KErala government owned beachside property . Nothing great in the park but beach is calm and good and you will have beautiful view of bekal fort from this beach]

2.Explore "Thiru Ananthapuram Temple] [Hardly 15 kms from Kasaragod city and it's scenic and only lake temple in kerala and at 1 pm, they will feed Pongal to Crocodile which is in the temple lake]. Kids will love this lake especially for the Fishes which will be visible in the lake waters

3.Explore "Maddur Temple" . Very famous Ganesha temple in that region [ Nearer to Ananthapuram]

4. Drive Straight towards Kannur and you will reach Nileshwar after 40 kms or so where you have backwater houseboats and nice place [ Not Equivalent to Alleppey which is the main place for houseboats but worth a try but will be less crowded when compared to alleppey ]

5. Once you are done with Nileshwar, Drive Straight and after few kms, you will see this signboard for "Valliya paramba backwaters". Not yet developed fully but the views will be mesmerizing. If you are adventure enough you can take the country boat which will take you to the Cocoanut trees filled Island [ 300 metres across the river to that island ] nothing to see in the island but again views from the island will be fantastic.

It will take a Day or 2 to cover all of the above and you can stay at kannur for the night.

For Second or third Day [as per your comfort], you can tentatively do the places which I mentioned in this thread.Must see I would say Muzhapilangad beach , Sri Muthappar temple [ For the River boating and scenery] , Parasinikadavu snake park

Please refer post:no:5 onwards in this thread for information which will give you idea about beaches, Mahe, Thalaserry areas.

http://www.indiamike.com/india/keral...kerala-t58646/

27th morning: leave for Ooty... staying there till 29th morning

From Kannur Railwaystation , Board Train to Coimbatore from where you have buses to ooty once in 15 minutes and it's just 3 hours journey. This is the most comfortable way.

Mayura Hoysala rooms will be in colonial Style and are very old[ Building's age I am saying and definitely it is good for the price but pai vista is relatively brand new and for your budget you may opt for Pai vista or King's Court or Metropole or Royal orachid [All including Mayura hoysala are in Same JLB road and is walkable from Mysore Jn ]

Also, now we’re certainly going to do both - the Shrirangapatna & Shivsamudra – thanks for the ideas, it would have been really bad to have missed out these two - both look great!

Fine.

Please post if you need more info.

Velu

The Kings Kourt Hotel in Mysore is very good. It is just opposite the Royal Orchid on JLB Road, just up the road from the station, and it matches your budget.

Hi all!

@pmvelu: thanks for the details on kasargod/ bekal area – we have finalized on staying in the kasargod area (most like the nileshwar backwaters)…accommodation is still not confirmed – something should work out in the next two days. I couldn't find more on the Bekal beach resort[ KErala government owned beachside property]...only came across bekal beach camp...are they both the same?
We have only 1 full day to explore around this area – since on 25th, I think we’ll reach only by 2-3 pm, so only 26th full day could be devoted to exploring the area – the crocodile temple seemed nice in the photos, so will not miss that…rest, am still deciding between which options to choose from the other ones suggested by you.
We’re taking a car/taxi for the whole trip, so I suppose we would not need to go thru coimbtore to reach ooty. is the route thru keral preferable or the one thru madikeri?

@nigelg & pmvelu: In mysore, we’ve finalized on pai vista. King's kourt had only a very slightly lower price quote & pai seemed better (at least as per the website...has a swimming ppol !)...so at least mysore & ooty accomodations are absolutely final for us!

Hope it all goes well…will post further queries if any.

Thanks and regards,
earth.

Hi,

Bekal beach resort of Kerala government do not have well-built rooms but they have tent kind of accomodation and the name [Bekal beach resort]is misleading. It's just a park with access to beach from where we can see Bekal fort at it's best. My suggestion is , you try to stay in Kasaragod [ Nearer to kasaragod new bus stand just in NH-17 you have decent lodges and you may try to avoid stay in Kasaragod town which is extremely crowded and highly noisy. ] and do a trip to bekal fort . There are few homestays nearer to Bekal fort itself. You may look and decide once you reach there but again staying in kasaragod in NH-17 is better [Just My opinion]

On your second question,if you plan fromo kasaragod / kannur to Ooty in cab , if you want scenic and shortest you may do

Kasaragod-Kannur-Kuthuparamba -periya[Wayanad Dt]-Mananthavadi[Wayanad Dt]-Sulthan bathery[Wayanad Dt]-Gudalur[Tamilnadu]-Ooty [Tamilnadu] and from Kuthuparamaba onwards you will be into very nice highly-scenic ghat roads until ooty and it's one fantastic nice scenic stretch.

If you are comfortable with Highways and would like to have minimal Ghat roads, you may do

Kasaragod-Kannur-Calicut-Nilambur-Gudalur-ooty [In this route, only 100 kms is Ghat roads . From Nilambur onwards Ghat / Scenic road starts].

Coimbatore route I mentioned thinking you will be using Train for the journey. If it's in car, Coimbatore is extremely circuitous. You may ignore that option.

Hope this helps

Regards
Velu
