Status as on March 4th,2011 :-

Just now did a short trip to ooty Via Bandipur-mudumalai and hence thought of sharing some info with photos of few wildlife we sighted just from the Mysore-Ooty Highway (All the photos are taken in 15 kms stretch right after Jungle lodges and resorts , Bandipur until Mudumalai NP forest checkpost).

If you like to see wild animals (just on the highway itself) , plan your trip from mysore to ooty in such a way that you cross Bandipur-Mudumalai Stretch between 6 am to 8 am or 4:30 pm to 6 pm. All the wildlife photos below were clicked between 7 am to 8 am .

General :-
1 .Ooty was just plainly very dull with hot sun in day time but chilly nights. Not much great greenery and even doddabetta and Botanical park were looking normal. Few rain spells might change it back to Normal ooty .
2. Bandipur NP and Mudumalai NP are quiet, calm with not much crowd (Due to peak examination time) BUT both the parks are OPEN for safaris.
3. Entire forest range of bandipur looked extremely dry with No leaves in the trees and shrubs / Trees are at it's driest best
4.Same is the story from Mudumalai to Masinagudi too.
5.If any of you are planning to visit ooty, you may delay it for 4 - 5 weeks if possible.
6.In case any of you need more info, Please post.

Few Wildlife Photos + Pristine Avalanche Dam of ooty :-

wow. from the highway you got some great shots!!

Has anyone spotted tiger or leopard at Bandipur? I heard sightings are almost unheard of now. the bus trip is sjust too short and only in the buffere zone etc etc. could you shed light there?

It's comparatively very difficult to sight Tiger or Leopard in south indian sanctuaries but I could see few lucky ones claiming they had sighted the same in bandipur.

I did many many trips across Bandipur / Nagarahole but never I saw any of those elusive creatures till now. Probably staying in Forest dept guest house in bandipur or Nagarahole and having a focussed private Jeep trip might help thou.

You are right. If it's a bus trip , it will be close to 1 Hr 15 Minutes duration and 3 trips in the morning and 3 trips in the evening and they change their routes for each safari to increase animal sightings. There are marked pre-defined circuits in all of this WLS / NPs and the safari will alternate between the marked circuits.

We saw a pair of Tigers in Bandipur. Quite a large area of south Indian parks are cordoned off from safari's etc so that the animals can live in peace. IMHO, this is the main reason for fewer sightings. Also, depending on the amount of water available, animals move from one "park" to the other. Mudumalai, Wayanad, Bandipur and Kabini/Nagarhole are one contiguous forest and animals move freely between them. So if you go to the wrong park at the wrong time, you will barely see much. Your best bet is to take the govt jeeps (that are provided by govt run Jungle Lodges) and plead with the guide to go off the beaten path.

Yes, there is a national highway (NH21) that runs smack in the middle of the national park. And occasionally wild life is run over by the vehicles. Last time I was there, we heard that the authorities were shutting the highway at night to minimize these accidents.

Bandhipur

Hi Velu,

We want to travel to Bandipur in mid October from Cochin.
What would be the most convenient way to travel by bus or train. Where do you get off if you take a bus and what station would you get off at if you go by train.
How many hours approx. would it take by bus / train.
Do you know of a decent hotel (not too expensive) who can arrange the jeep safaries.

Your assistance would help.

Thanks & Best Regards,
Joyce
