Okay. I guessed it, L1S1.

So here is the plan :

26th : Board Gitanjali

27th : Reach Gondia around 5 am. By car transfer to the Lodge at Chorkhamara ( 50 Kms , 70 Mnts ). Take rest. After having breakfast visit the Chorkhamara Talao ( lake ) . A Leisurely walk of 20 minutes through Chorkhamara Village ( around One & a half Kms from the resort) . Do some photography in the village . People are nice. Then back to Resort. Have Lunch. Do evening safari to New Nagzira Forest. This is the hilly section of Nagzira National Park. Visit Chanditibba Watchtower . This is also the highest point of the National Park offering excellent view . Night halt at Resort.

28th : Check out of the Lodge . Start for morning Safari to Old Nagzira at 6.30 am . The resort will provide you packed Breakfast. After 40/45 minutes , you will reach Chaukashi where you have to register your vehicle details . You can also check in to your FRH rooms ( or at least dump your luggage ) & have breakfast there . After that continue with your morning safari till 11 am. Back to FRH. Have Lunch. Then do the evening Safari again in Old Nagzira. Night halt at the FRH. They provide Veg food only.

29th : Do the morning safari in Old Nagzira again. Try to reach the Chorkhamara Check Post around 11 am. Go to the lodge . Car will be waiting there for your onward journey to Gondia . You may collect packed Lunch from the resort ( order to be placed well in advance) if you want to taste the excellent Chula - Chicken again on your way back

You will do 4 safaris - 3 in Old Nagzira & 1 in New Nagzira. BTW, planning for which month ?

Hello Nagzira experts!

I'm visiting the sanctuary in mid April with a few friends. We have booked 2 safaris on a Saturday through the Chorkhamara gate #1 and train tickets from Mumbai/Pune to Gondia and back. I've a few queries:
1: Where to stay? Inside the forest or outside? We do not have a car with us, so how does that impact our decision?
2: Do we need to book a gypsy beforehand or will one be available at the gate?
3: We have time for another safari. Which gate should we go to? Or can we do anything apart from a safari nearby?

Thanks for now!

Hi Kapil,

We stayed in a resort just outside Chorkhamara gate . You may stay there. They have both AC & Non AC rooms & provide tasty veg / Non veg food. Owner of the resort Mr. Dahikar is a helpful person. He can arrange Gypsy for safaris at Govt approved rates. You will get Gypsies outside Chorkamar gate also. From Gondia station we hired a car . For resort & Car contacts please check Post No # 30 of this thread.

If you stay outside Chorkhamara gate, then it would be wise to enter the forest through that gate only. Other gates are far away from Chorkhamara village. Another advantage of Chorkhmara Gate is that it has access to both Old Nagzira (Zone I & II ) & New Nagzira ( Zone III ). So you may do 2 safaris in Old Nagzira & the 3rd one in New Nagzira through Chorkhamar Gate. If you want to stay inside the forest, then please book rooms well in advance through Maharashtra Eco Tourism online portal ( link provided in Post No # 30 ). Hope this helps

AG - I'll look up the resort once and have a word with Mr. Dahikar. I was more inclined towards staying inside the forest, but I'm not able to understand the exact process. I almost booked Holiday Home before posting this here. For the additional safari I'll probably take the ChorKhamara Gate #2 - I think that is the one to new Nagzira. Can anyone confirm?

Yes Kapil, Chorkhamara Gate 2 is the entry gate to New Nagzira . Actually from Chorkhamara side tourists first enter through the Gate # 1 for both Old & New Nagzira & all the Gypsies take the same route for the first two & a half Kms till they reach the Old Entry Gate which once served as the main entrance to Nagzira. Now this gate in buffer zone has been abandoned & no checking is done at this gate. Straight road ahead through this gate takes you to Old Nagzira . And Gypsies going to New Nagzira take a right turn at this point & proceed towards Gate #2 which is 3/4 kms away , on Sakoli - Tirora Highway. This stretch (from Old Gate to Gate No 2 ) is beautiful . You have Old Nagzira Forest on the left side & New Nagzira on the right side of this road. Since number of Gypsies is less ( as number of tourists doing safari in New Nagzira is less ) chances of sighting are high on this route

April 2017 safari update

I visited the park on 14-16 April alongwith 2 of my friends.

Stay: Since the group was small, we did not stay inside the forest, but at Royal Tiger Resort just outside the gate. The room rent was 1500 per day + food. The resort is a 1 room affair, run by a lady Pallavi who also manages the Kanchan Resort. The place is comfortable for a group of 3 people. Food is good, as is their driver. They also sent their gypsy for pickup from Tumsar Road station.

Safaris: We did 3 safaris - all in Old Nagzira. We had planned to rest on the evening of 14th, but decided to do a safari instead in Old Nagzira. 2 safaris followed on the next day. We cancelled the 4th safari in New Nagzira on Sunday.

Sightings: Bison (lots), Wild Dogs, Peafowl, Spotted Deer, Sambhar, Wild Boar, Nilgai and quite a few birds.

We missed: 2 leopards and 1 tiger. The tiger was hiding behind a cabin near a waterhole and persisted till 6pm after which we had to leave. The leopards avoided us, but another group spotted one next to the main road to Sakoli.

-----

One day after our return, we saw an instagram post by a group we met during the safaris. What they saw was:
1: baby sloth bear piggybacking on its mother
2: male leopard stalking and killing a langur
3: pack of wild dogs finishing a chital near the lake
4: a mating leopard pair drinking water together

I guess it was our luck!
