I booked an eticket for a Varanasi - Agra train and realized when I tried to print it that the passport number I had given was incorrect -- I'd added an extra 0 after the last number. The number is correct except for the extra 0. I asked Indian Railways about this and got this response:

"Kindly note that modification is not permitted in etickets after booking , If your below id no. is incorrect please cancell the ticket and rebook again . Sorry for inconvience."

The email indicates that I shouldn't still try to use the ticket with the wrong passport number. The problem is that I am confirmed on the train but will go to WL1 if I rebook, and I don't really want to give up a confirmed booking. Anyone know if they will be strict on the passport number? This is my first trip to India, and I hop on the plane in 6 hours! Many thanks!

Simply go in for reprinting option of the ticket in the IRCTC website and there you can re-enter the passport number...that will solve the problem....

That won't work. In order to reprint a ticket you have to enter the passport number that was originally provided - you can't change it.

In this case I don't think it will matter. An extra zero at the end of the number is so trivial that I don't think any ticket inspector will refuse to accept the ticket. Just travel and forget about it.

If you book for waitlist 1 and then you cancel your original ticket, will you get the reservation that you just cancelled.....?

Or am I being too simplistic?

I don't think anyone checks passport umber in TRAIN tickets. As long as there is no one else claiming your seat as theirs, you should be ok. And even if they do, all that may be checked is the name on the passport.

You cannot have e-tickets in waitlist...only confirm or rac tickets can be booked..

Identity IS checked. But an additional zero can easily be explained as a typo and I am quite certain that the TT will accept that.

Don't bother rebooking.
So long as your name is correctly spelt, exactly as it is in your PP, and your age checks out with your DOB, u'll be fine.

Anyway 0 is not a number, right folks?

It's been years since I have take a train in India. But, how is identitity checked whan a vast majority of Indians have no identity cards? IDs are hardly checked on domestic flights either.

In order to book an e-ticket you have to provide an ID number, and carry the same ID when travelling.

But this is academic now, as the OP is probably already in India by now...

A lil correction Mickey S..i just rechecked in the IRCTC website and ya i can reprint the e-ticket after adding the passport number its doesnt reconfirm(atleast to me.. .)

Edit:- and ya regarding proof is checked or not..it all depends on the mood of TTE.i have seen them checking sometimes....and sometimes not checking the ticket at all...
