Hi Everyone!

Hopefully just a quick question....I am planning on booking the Ranthambore Express from Sawai Madahpur, which departs at 14:40 and arrives into Jodhpur at 22:30, and I was thinking of booking into sleeper class (air con) to give me the most space possible and the option of being able to lie-down and sleep to help the time pass. However, it appears that during the bulk of that journey the beds will be folded away as it will be a day-time journey and so we would just be sharing a bench with up to 3 people, and will not have access to the beds. Is this correct?? It just seems a bit strange that they would offer (and charge for) a bed on that journey but only provide a seat? If thats the case then surely I might as well just pay for a normal seat and save some money?!!

If you get an Upper berth, then you can will have access to the bed through out the day. The Lower berth and the Middle berth are to be used as seats from 06:00 am IST to 09:00 pm IST as per General Conditions of Indian Railways.

Whether you have a Upper berth or not, the general understanding is that during day journeys the upper berth is available for any of the 3 in that section to use the upper berth for a nap. It is quite understood that the upper berth is shared during day journeys and one person cannot use/claim it the whole time.

I agree with aarosh. Just ask for the Upper Berth when you book your ticket, and you can sleep the whole journey even if it is day. Nobody in the lower berths can claim to share your berth even for 5 mins if you are sleeping.

don't read too much into the rules and regulations, they are only indicative. Nobody will wake-up that early ie., 6am while travelling in long distance trains. If you were alloted a lower berth and you want to sleep in day time, just request the co-passenger who were alloted an upper berth, they don't mind allowing you to sleep in the upper berth alloted to them while they take a seat in the lower berth during day time
