I had booked First Class Tickets for my travel (in West Coast Exp) from Tiruppur to Madras. But surprisingly, am seeing a quota Code "ND" instead of "GEN" (General). I had tried my luck to get more details regarding that but could only manage to get to know it's Day-Night Quota (below URL lists down all possible quotas in IR and thought wd share what i came across).

http://indiavoice.info/20090304558/i...-railways.html

Can any one let me know how different is Quota "ND" from "GEN"?. fyi, I would be boarding at 07:25AM and arriving in Madras the same evening.

PS: Normally we know that even on Gen Quota, seats are berth-by-night and for sitting during day in SL,3AC,2AC..,! Any clarity on this appreciated as this may mean different way of allocation of seats and am concerned that my new born is gonna travel with us.

Here's an educated guess.

I traveled on that train, and in FC, and I've also a little knowledge of FC, so I hope my guess is accurate.

A 4-berth cabin in FC sleeps 4 at night, however, it sits 6 during the day (a 2-berth coupe sits 3 during the day), when I read the reservation chart I noticed that a 3rd person would enter my 2 berth coupe at Tiruppur, so my guess is that night/day is the correct quota and that it applies to daytime passengers entitled to a seat in FC during the day.

As far as I'm aware, this only happens in FC.

I have not travelled in SL for a long time but used to also happen in SL (1970s). Most of those shorter journeys can also be done in short distance unreserved trains that are much cheaper and so most persons do not travel by SL for these shorter distances. But one can enter a SL during the day and ask the TTE for a berth.
