Hi, I'm new here and am leaving for Delhi tomorrow. I'm currently on the wait list for the 30 December Delhi-Jaisalmer express (no. 4059) for 2nd AC. When I purchased the tickets we were WL 34 and 35 and now are 21 and 22. From what I've read it seems pretty unlikely that we will get off the wait list.

My understanding is that with WL tickets we can get onthe train, but we can only ride in the "second seating" or unreserved section. Is this correct? What if the second seating is sold out (at last check there were 66 seats remaining)? Would it be worth it to purchase second seating tickets as well to ensure that we can get on the train?

Just how bad will the ride in second seating be? we've never been to India but have backpacked much of Africa and survived some pretty uncomfortable transit situations (a 36 hour bus ride in West Africa comes to mind). Would this be considerably worse? Would it be preferable to ride in second seating than to wait another day to catch the train?

First, you cannot board the train on a Waitlisted ticket in your class. It has to be RAC

Unreserved, sure, I guess.

The second unreserved seating can be terrible. Steven_ber has posted a few times on this recently, I just found one post, but there is another one where he exited the train at 1am in some small station because he was that uncomfortable.. and he is a seasoned train traveller

I wouldn't advise this option.

Thanks for the quick response, that does sound unpleasant. I just looked again, and I can get sleeper class seats through tatkal (14 remaining). I could also go for the tatkal 2AC, but would be WL 2 and 3, which I don't think I'm willing to risk at this point.

How much of a pain will it be to cancel the WL i-ticket once I arrive in Delhi?

Not a big pain. Can be done at the station.

Btw, there are many here much better informed about trains than I am. If you can, check in again for better information, if they reply.

Not better informed than the Captain or Steven, but just got back from my trip.
While not all trains are like the Mumbai locals described in Steven's post, Second Sittings still leave much to be desired. I love trains in India and will travel in "oh well what the hell" conditions. But this time I boarded a Second Sittings compartment by mistake, looking for my SL coach - that was from Hampi to Goa -, and it felt a bit like opening the lid off a slaves ship. People were not sitting on each other's lap but it was rather packed and very dirty (to the point of health hazard, is why I'm mentioning it) and lots of bugs. But what really struck me is that the atmosphere wasn't nice at all. Granted, it was all of 6 AM and maybe people were just waking up. Still I was glad to end up in my sleeper coach with a bunch of engineering graduates going for a wild party in Goa. A crowd I would have shrunk from, especially as I seemed to be the only woman in the whole coach and I do not relish listening to the whole list of available ringtones from every phone in the confounded coach, but the guys turned out super nice. I do feel it's worth it to buy a SL ticket.

Slight correction, if I may..

While steven posted in the local train thread, his post had to do with a long distance train in UP, I think, and the unreserved compartment there.

Right you are... Read it too fast, assumed it was part of the Local thread.

Hey, the entire Mumbai local train scene is unreserved

PS, except those card playing guys in the Virar fast train seem to have some reservation.

Waitlisted tickets can be cancelled at the station easily. If by that time your ticket has become RAC or confirmed you can still cancell but you will lose some money.
WL 2 & 3 will most likely move to RAC if not confirmed.
2nd. class unreserved travel from Delhi to Jaisalmer should not be attempted.

One of my friends has done the journey from Trivandrum to Mumbai in the unreserved section, when her ticket ended up "waiting list 1"....

If the train starts in Delhi, you can go for it as an adventure... otherwise it can happen that you simply don't get the chance to enter the train as the compartments are more than full!

I'd recommend to get a sleeper class ticket if it's still available and cancel the other ticket, that won't be a problem. If you are used to backpacking in Africa, sleeper calss will be fine for you.

Travelling long distance in the unreserved section can be a real unpleasant adventure... depends how full the compartment is (I've done it several times... if you get a seat, it's ok, but standing for hours is no fun)
