Hi,

I am new to the forums although have been reading them since i decided to visit India. Now I just got a ticket for the Cricket World Cup Semi in Chandigarh which has completely changed what I need to do! My original plan was Delhi, then Varanasi, agra, jaipur (not so bothered if I had miss there, Udiapur (wanted to be there for the Festival on 6 April) back to Delhi and then onwards to UK. Well now it is a bit stuffed up so I have a sort of changed itinerary which is Delhi, then Agra then to Chandigarh for cricket and that is where I strike the problem - the only trains out of there go to Delhi or Jaipur - from Delhi or Jaipur I can go to Varanasi (which is a must visit)but is means another night in Delhi. Then I cannot see a way to get from Vanasi to Udaipur - I cannot see where trains cross so that i can change trains and I have spent hours searching. That was why the original itinerary was done in the order it was because I could not find a way to get from Varanasi to Udiapur. Can anyone help? One other alternative is to go somewhere else instead of Udaipur (sob sob) but to be honest i am leaving next Thursday and would like to try and get the itinerary sorted before leaving! Cleartrip has been behaving very badly so I do not have any tickets booked at all yet.

Any help or suggestions from anyone. Thanks in advance

It's hard to accurately advise without more info, but I worked out when the semi is, so here's what I'd do.

Delhi-Kalka-Shimla- then bus to Chandigarh (just for the scenic rail ride, it's said to be world class)

Watch the cricket (as you'll be there)

Amballa is the local transport hub(trains) and is 70km from Chandigarh, get a train from Amballa to Varanasi either early or late on the 31st, and when I say early I mean just after midnight or 2 in the morning, a lot depends on what time the cricket ends, as you're Australian I guess that means about a week ago. (sorry, I've no idea how the cricket is going, I heard a rumor that Ireland and Bangladesh have cricket teams, lets hope England don't have to play them)

From Varanasi to Agra

From Agra (OR, and a big OR) Bharatpur to Udaipur, then back to Delhi.

I had a little play around trying to find availability from Ambala to Varanasi (or Mughal Sarai, 16km from Varanasi) and I found 1 available on the train just after 2 in the morning, and low waitlists on other trains, if you don't find anything, tell me what trains you're interested in, what dates and classes and I'll see what I can find, one thing you could try, search for availability from Ambala to the trains destination, sometimes there's more chance of availability, and the extra money can be little, so worth it.

Hi Steven and others

Thanks so much I had not found Ambala - have been playing around and this looks like it will work - yeeha! Leith your link was very useful.

Steven could you explain what you mean by

From Agra (OR, and a big OR) Bharatpur to Udaipur, then back to Delhi.

Sounds ominous - and by the way I am English - so not much hope of seeing England involved in a semi!

The Agra-Udaipur train doesn't have a lot of availability, but the Delhi-Udaipur train has loads, and it's well timed from Bharatpur.

Bharatpur is 55km from Agra, but only 25 from Fathepur Sikri (30km from Agra), so you could spend 7-8 hours in Agra, then go to Fathepur Sikri, then go to Bharatpur, there are hotels with nice outside restaurants in Bharatpur, great places to spent a relaxing hour or 2 before getting your 21:40 train to Udaipur, and when you bear in mind that you'll likely want to visit Fathepur Sikri, the Bharatpur option doesn't cost you any time, just a little inconvenience as you'd have to carry your luggage with you.

Well surprise surprise having trouble with Cleartrip and found out that you can pay with Amex on IRCTC - however the login registration does not go through! Unfortunately I cannot find any availability to get to Shimla with linking trains from Delhi until 29 March. Which means I would get there and then have to leave to get to Chandigarah - perhaps stay one night and then get the bus for 4 hours early in the morning - although I have found info about the buses that suggest they run every 15 minutes I am not confident enough to risk it at the planning stage so will have to leave Shimla that night. Long way to go for an afternoon! Do you have any other suggestions?

The biggest problem is that I cannot book on Cleartrip as it does not seem to work - am going to try tomorrow morning to see if 7am Aussie time works - I have 14 IE tabs open with Cleartrip on them! I am not so keen on the other way round to get to Agra - it is too hard - I am 57 and having to carry my sac and cope with th eheat sounds much too much like hard work. Cannot believe how difficult it is to book tickets - guess if the worse comes to the worst then I will have to try and book the tickets on arrival - pain though! Do the Shimla trains have a taktal and tourist quota?
